A Prayer For March

By Staff     Mar 13, 2005

Dear Lord,You know I haven’t asked for much lately. Okay, so there was that little lottery prayer. And that bolt of lightning for Barry Bonds. But outside of that, I haven’t bothered you too much during this lent season. But now, can I ask you for one tiny, little favor? If you find time in your busy schedule, figure out a way for Kansas to play North Carolina in the Elite Eight. The NCAA Tournament Committee did its part on Sunday, placing the third-seeded Jayhawks in the same bracket as the top-seeded Tar Heels. Now, it’s up to you. ![][1]You see, North Carolina has this head coach who used to live here. You might know him. He said your name a lot, whether it was cursing a bad round of golf, or thanking you for delivering Nick Collison. Two years ago, he cried (like he always did in the spring), and left for (it sounds like you know this place) Chapel Hill, N.C.I know we’re not supposed to act out of spite, but nobody around here likes this coach anymore. That’s hard to believe, considering how he used to be bigger than you in this town.Even the KU seniors, the same players that this coach recruited and led to two Final Fours, drool when they think of a possible reunion with their head coach.”It would be a dream,” Michael Lee said.”I would be lying to myself,” Keith Langford said, “if there wasn’t some sort of story line involved.”Now, this is where you come in.This former coach has had problems this time of year, his own personal demons that we all have inside. Some people’s demons are alcoholism or abuse. His are choke jobs against Rhode Island and Arizona. Also, the Jayhawks aren’t playing very well lately. They’re just 5-5 in their last 10 games, and Langford, according to the current coach, is in desperate need of a bowel movement. So please, make it happen. Make the former coach sit up there the day before the game, and answer all those questions about Al Bohl, his tearful exit, and the chilly reception he still gets in the Midwest.Help the seniors earn their just rewards, and help the arms that Wayne Simien gave to the former coach be raised in jubilation.I’m not asking for much. Besides, something tells me that you wouldn’t mind seeing this, either.
