Emil Brown, All-Star

By Staff     Jun 17, 2005

It’s summer, which means that it’s time for the [bitter sports journalists][1] of the world to start complaining about tired old problems. After all, there’s nothing else to talk about, and there are column inches to fill.At the top of their list? The Major League Baseball All-Star Game.In the next few weeks, you won’t be able to turn on ESPN without hearing the argument that not every team should have an all-star. After all, they’ll say, why should a Royal or Rockie appear in the game while a deserving member of the Red Sox or Cardinals is left at home? It’s the same argument every summer. And it’s starting to get old.![][2]Personally, I love the idea that every team will have an all-star. It gives us Royals fans a reason to watch. It brings up the argument of the worst all-star ever (Ken Harvey?). It temporarily ends Peter Gammons’ Red Sox infatuation. It also means that Emil Brown should start packing his bags. That’s right. Emil “The Real Deal” Brown should earn his first all-star appearance this year, serving as the Royals’ representative at the July 12 mid-summer classic in Detroit.I know it’s a stretch — but nobody else on the Royals’ roster makes sense. Brown ranks third on the team in batting average (.285), as well as second in home runs (7) and runs batted in (34). Ever since Buddy Bell took over, Brown has been on an absolute tear, hitting over .400 with 14 RBI.The path to success has not come smoothly to Brown, who played a stretch last season in the Mexican League and was a long shot to make the roster out of spring training.Honestly, nobody else deserves an all-star invitation. Mike Sweeney has been inconsistent and injured. Matt Stairs’ numbers are worse than Brown. And none of the pitchers have done anything spectacular. When the American League All-Stars are announced on July 12, “The Real Deal” should be announced as the Royals’ representative.I can already hear Peter Gammons crying.
