Sorry, Roy, But I’m Not Buying It

By Staff     Jan 13, 2005

Take Roy Williams please. It’s mid-January, and once again ol’ Roy is the talk of college basketball. His North Carolina Tar Heels are flying high a dunking, shooting, fun bunch of future NBA stars that are a lock to win the NCAA title. What? You don’t believe me? Then you should certainly trust college basketball demigods [Dick Vitale][1] and [ Andy Katz.][2] Surely they would have no reason to be biased towards an ACC team. After all, they are objective, professional journalists. Personally? I’m not buying it.![][3] It’s like watching a [terrible comedian stuck in Branson.][4] We’ve seen this joke before, and nobody’s laughing. Last week, I was sifting through old footage of the [1989 Jayhawks.][5] Roy’s second team at Kansas holds two impressive school records: most points scored in one game (the 150-95 demolition of Kentucky) and highest scoring margin (the Jayhawks beat opponents that year by an average of 20 points per game). But when it came to the NCAA tournament, KU was bounced in the second round by a nondescript UCLA team led by “the slick jimmies” — Jim McLean and Jim Harrick. Different year, same joke. In 1996-97, the Jayhawks started the season 22-0, yet still found a way to lose to a number four seed in the Big Dance. Different year, same joke. And in 2001-02, the Jayhawks advanced all the way to the Final Four, where they were exposed as soft frauds against eventual champion Maryland. Different year, same joke. I’m not a Roy Williams hater, I swear. The guy had every right in the world to take his dream job. But I won’t get fooled again, not when I’ve seen his talented teams run into tougher, grittier teams in March and fold when they have to play two games in three days. Dick Vitale may have drank the UNC kool-aid. But you can only hear a joke so many times before it stops being funny.**So Long, Larry** Ever since this blog started in August, former Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy has adorned the top of the page. As most of you probably know, the picture was taken in Columbia, Mo., after Eustachy had about six Natural Lights at a college house party and decided to pose with some coeds. Here’s the problem. As funny as the photos were, they ended up costing Eustachy his job, his marriage, and his children. This season, Eustachy is in his first year at [Southern Miss,][6] trying to piece his life back together. His touching story is close to my heart, as somebody who lost his job twice in a year and a half, and as a child of divorce. So out of respect for Eustachy I will soon take his picture down. However, I have no idea what will take his place, so I’m leaving it up to you. The person who gives me the best suggestion will receive a free lawrence.com bumper sticker and shirt.**Family Circus** I know of [at least one guy][7] who hates the Family Circus comic strip as much as I do. That’s why I found this [amazon.com book review][8] so hilarious. Check it out soon, because it will be long gone before Ol’ Roy loses his first game in March.
