2004: The Year That Was

By Staff     Dec 24, 2004

I’m a sucker for top ten lists. Whenever one of those mindless shows comes on VH1, I find myself watching it. Even when it’s “Britney Spears Ten Worst Dating Decisions.” Yes — I have no life. But now that we’re closing the book on 2004, it’s time to look back on the year that was for KU athletics. And what a year it was. From soccer championships, to wins over Missouri and Kansas State, 2004 was one of the best years in recent KU history. With the year winding down, my overbearing boss and I debated the top ten KU plays from the past year. These aren’t moments or games but just individual plays that helped make 2004 so memorable.10. Erica Hallman’s no-look pass to Crystal Kemp in the December 18 game against Dartmouth. Judging by the attendance numbers, you probably didn’t see it, but she delivered one of the best assists this side of Christian Moody.9. Travis Metcalf breaks the KU career home run record on May 4 against Southwest Missouri State. As far as underrated Lawrence entertainment options KU baseball is at the top of the list.8. Game point for the KU volleyball team against Colorado. The win last month propelled Ray Bechard’s team to another NCAA Tournament, where it lost to eventual Final Four participant Washington.7. Seven stands for Charles Gordon’s seven interceptions this past season, including two out of nowhere picks against Colorado. By the time he leaves Lawrence, Gordon’s name might adorn the north bowl of Memorial Stadium.6. J.R. Giddens’ game-tying three pointer against Georgia Tech. By the way, I’m still waiting for the Giddens break out game this season. It can come any day now that Wayne Simien is out of the lineup.5. Number five is reserved for the year’s only conference champion the KU women’s soccer team. The Jayhawks beat Iowa State thanks to a ridiculous goal from Caroline Smith from 25 yards out.4. John Randle’s twisting, turning 43 yard touchdown against Kansas State. I can still hear the bells ringing from the stadium speakers.3. David Padgett’s junk shot against Missouri. Say what you will about Padgett but KU fans will always thank him for closing out the Hearnes Center. By the way how much do the Jayhawks need Padgett now?2. “The Pass.” Christian Moody’s over-the-head, no-look pass to Giddens against TCU.1. “The Catch.” Mark Simmons’ one-handed catch of a Jason Swanson 31-yard pass against Kansas State. This play was the biggest KU football play in ten years.I was also working on a “bottom ten” list listing off the ten most forgettable moments from the past year but because I’m in the holiday spirit, I’ll spare the sarcasm. It’s Christmas Eve, and I’m at work.Happy Holidays, everyone! See you in 2005!
