Bill Self talks about zone defense, sporadic shooting in win over K-State

It was a tale of two halves when it came to the KU offense on Monday.

In the 70-56 win over K-State, the Jayhawks shot 70 percent from the field in the first half, a number that dropped to below 30 percent in the second.

“The first half we shot it great but played bad,” Self said. “In the second half, we took care of the ball and shot it miserably.”

The Jayhawks had enough to win, though, largely because of a decision to switch to zone for a pair of stretches on the day.

K-State coach Bruce Weber said his team hadn’t prepared for zone at all, while Self said the decision came from something he saw on the court.

“I would say,” Self said, “the fact that we couldn’t guard Dean Wade.”
