Harwell, Shepherd lead Jayhawks in loss at West Virginia

By Staff     Oct 4, 2014

**1 – Nick Harwell**: Returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown, a play that symbolized Kansas not giving up on a game it could not at that point win, which sent the Jayhawks with a little momentum going into the coming week of practices.

**2 – JaCorey Shepherd** broke up three passes, including two in the end zone, and averaged 24.5 yards per kickoff return.

**3 – Nigel King**: He knows how to get behind the defense and almost always catches what’s thrown in his area. Had four receptions for 52 yards and would have had a more productive day had he not been overthrown repeatedly.

**4 – Isaiah Johnson**: Picked off a pass at the goal line and returned it 29 yards. Also had team-high nine tackles.

**5 – Ben Heeney**: Two of his six tackles came behind the line of scrimmage for nine yards in losses.

**6 – Cassius Sendish**: Missed a tackle at the line of scrimmage on a reverse that went for a big gain, but also made some big tackles.

**7 – Dexter McDonald**: Had the difficult assignment of staying with Kevin White and for the most part did a solid job. White earned his 132 receiving yards and one touchdown. White came into the game averaging 158 yards a game in receptions. McDonald had eight tackles and broke up one pass.

**8 – Justin McCay**: Recovered a muffed punt, which set up team’s lone touchdown. Also hustled his way to big hits on special teams.

**9 – Corey Avery**: Broke a scoring drought of six-plus quarters with a 4-yard touchdown run and finished with 58 rushing yards.

**10 – Michael Cummings**: Not an extremely accurate passer, Cummings took over at the start of the second half and the offense moved a little better with him in there. Didn’t always hit open targets, but he spotted them better than starter Montell Cozart and did a better job of knowing where to go with the ball.
