Tyshawn Taylor takes top Keegan honor

1. Tyshawn Taylor: When UCLA took the lead, Taylor took it right back with three rapid-fire buckets on his way to a 17-point night that included five steals, four assists and strong defense. He made just 2 of 6 free throws though. 2. Tyrel Reed: Carried the team in the first half with 15 of his 17 points. Made 3 of 4 three-point shots and all four of his free throws.

3. Marcus Morris: Had trouble defensively, but came through on the other end down the stretch, scoring 13 of his 16 points in the second half.

4. Brady Morningstar: Made all three field goal attempts, had four assists and more importantly flashed mad-quick hands in coming up with three steals.

5. Mario Little: Good thing he’s not a closer for some baseball team because he doesn’t have a clue how to protect a lead. He hit the boards hard with eight rebounds in 18 minutes, but he also took nine shots and made the game-winning free throw with seven-tenths of a second left.

6. Markieff Morris: Torched repeatedly by UCLA freshman Joshua Smith, Markieff fouled out in 19 minutes of action. He totaled nine points and seven rebounds.

7. Elijah Johnson: Ten quiet minutes would have seemed more productive if he had made both free-throw attempts, instead of just one.

8. Thomas Robinson: This game, more than any, showed just how much work he needs at the defensive end.

9. Travis Releford: Played just nine minutes because when he was on the court Tyler Honeycutt had his way with him.

10. Jeff Withey: He never looked skinnier than when trying to guard Smith, UCLA’s 305-pound center.

The Keegan Ratings: Season Standings
1. Marcus Morris (62 points)
2. Tyshawn Taylor (60 points)
3. Markieff Morris (55 points)

6. Tyrel Reed (35 points)
7. Travis Releford (32 points)
8. Mario Little (25 points)
9. Jeff Withey (20 points)
10. Elijah Johnson (17 points)

I would agree here. I think TT had a fantastic game. He showed that he has matured enough to be the leader we need down the stretch. He didn't take over the second half by himself, but he definitely led the charge.

No argument with the ratings, but speaking of not having a clue how to protect a lead--Reed needs to realize he's the man to have the ball when the late fouling begins. It looked like Self was trying to make that clear to Reed during one of the time-outs.

Wow we did not deserve to win this game. Honestly Im not sure how we did win. Morris twins and Trob were getting worked down low all game. Their post defense is so sorry right now. Joshua smith had a nice game tho, the dude is a brick in the paint. I know TT got us some clutch points but I really don't agree that he had a great game. He threw a slew of wild passes. He's the one that threw the dumb pass to mario little in the paint during the last few seconds. Mario shouldn't have gotten the ball.

The last-second action was Mario recovering the ball when Marcus had it slapped away. Putting up a shot was the only chance to score, and it did pay off. ugly as it was.

The foul call was probably a make-up call by ref for the non-calls on Tyrel at the other end and Marcus at the top of the key.

Thank God for seniors -- all three of them!

Make-up call or not, the foul was definitely there, and way to go Mario for getting the attempt in. If it hadn't been a shot, there wouldn't have been a foul called.

The Morris twins got worked because every time they stood their ground a foul was called. Defenders are allowed their space on the floor but apparently not last night. UCLA had some of those calls against them last night as well. Make our free throws and its not close.

It wasn't a dumb pass to get it to Little on the final play, there was little time and UCLA had their hands all around him. He had to get the ball to someone, anyone in a white jersey. He didn't have the luxury of time to look for someone else.

It was an ugly game but we won it and the Home Streak is still alive!

@ KU62----totally agree about the make-up call by the ref for the non-calls on Tyrel.

I thought Tyrel would get the top spot but after reading this, T-square deserves the top spot. Nice going, Tyrel.

Ugly ugly win for KU. Ucla exposed our Bigs' weakness and now everyone knows. Hope that the D Man can fix those holes in the post defense and quick! Part of me also hopes Memphis beats KU on tuesday. They need a loss to learn from going into the last half of the non con schedule and into the Big 12 conf schedule.
Early prediction here, Memphis wins a close game. Single digits.

Disagree on the hope that we NEED a loss.

Bobby Knight once said, "I can think of a lot of ways to overcome overconfidence short of getting your brains beaten out."

It's a learning process, and the Hawks should have learned plenty from the last two close games against Arizona and UCLA. Hoping for a loss to Memphis is pointless. If we haven't gotten the message by now, we're not going to get it at all.

Yah good point, your right. I guess Im a bit disappointed in our guys' performance last night. Cshjhawk also has a good point. Although I dont expect them to go undefeated between now and the big 12 tournament, I bet they will work their bugs out.

Lesson for the "bigs" is to improve their ability to better position themselves under the board on both defense and offense, especially if you are up against a 305 lb brickhouse!.In that resepct, UCLA outsmarted us and outrebounded us. There were symptoms of this in the Arizona game as well. I am sure that Coach Manning is working on this as we speak!

1 and 2 on the list... 0 Offensive Rebounds on the season. In a night we needed to grab offensive boards, #1 and #2 contributed zero of them. Nice to see them hitting shots. Getting second chance shots might help a little more.

I do not envy coach's decision once selby enters the picture.

TT is the best player, needs more scoring opportunities

My opinion is that the refs in the last couple games have not allowed our bigs to hold any position without calling fouls on them. Even when they have tried to avoid contact they are being called for fouls. How can they play any defence if they aren't allowed to even raise their hands?

One question when are our big guys going to dunk the ball under the basket. Kief jumped ( not very high ) and dropped the ball into the basket when he could have slammed it home and fired up the crowd and his teammates .. I love the twins but they are lazy under the basket lately and I wonder why? Maybe they would rather shoot 3's I don't know but we need to play with a lot more energy from our three post players. T-Rob got blocked a number of times last night .. that's horrible for a guy his size and strength.
