_Ryan Wood fills in for your usual Greene Room host…_So this isn’t exactly the Greene Room. Ryan Greene, your Kusports.com editor, is on vacation this week, and your KU football beat writer is filling in. A name change won’t be happening, though, because “The Wood Room” makes no sense and isn’t a clever play on words.Greene will be back next week, unless he vanishes upon realizing the Chicago Cubs will not win an NL Central begging for someone to take control.Anyway, let’s touch base on some KU topics as the dog days get started: * I would weigh in on the ACL injury of hoopster Brandon Rush, but the horse is six feet under with massive internal injuries from the log it was beaten with. Sorry, basketball fans. Here’s my prediction, though: Rush gingerly comes back in six months and makes his debut against Southern California on Dec. 1 in Los Angeles. Rush hits stride by Big 12 play and gets picked 18th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft. That’s not an educated guess, by the way. It’s a lot less credible than that.Speaking of, a “Brandon Rush returns pool” would be really cool in someone’s office. I’m guessing the opening game would be the most valuable pick, but don’t count out Nov. 25 (Arizona, the first big game) or USC (the first road game). I don’t condone gambling away from the Missouri River, so you didn’t read that here. * Our own Gary Bedore reports that Bill Self was sporting traces of a goatee during a small [Rush-related media session][1] the other day. Which is a great chance to offer my plea: Bill, the[ President Chester A. Arthur look][2] would really be sweet. Show up with the Arthur beard, KU goes 40-0 with no close games. Chin hair is overrated anyway. * Summer conditioning for the KU football team starts Monday. This is the time of the year when you DON’T envy the players’ full scholarships.Last year, I observed an entire training session [for a story][3]. It’s hell, and it’s just what they need to go four quarters in the Big 12. I still remember Dexton Fields’ tricep cramping up as he was doing a wheelbarrow up a 30-foot incline while a teammate held his ankles. He toughed it out and finished the drill, and I weeped a little for him over in the corner. Hopefully that helped.KU strength coach Chris Dawson is highly respected among the coaches and players, and once again, don’t expect conditioning to ever be an issue for the Jayhawks this fall. They’ll be taking care of it over the next eight weeks. * I would like to make a plea for Jayhawk fans to really take an interest in the budding baseball career of Tom Gorzelanny. We just ran a piece on him in Thursday’s Journal-World, [detailing his somewhat sudden rise][4] from KU’s bullpen to being the ace of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ staff. It was fun to write. Most of us in the media wish all athletes were as open, as friendly and as talkative as many baseball players are.And Gorzelanny is as nice as any of them – and he can pitch, too. His teammate, Salomon Torres, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “he’s a young kid who’s developing into a superstar, and we’re all watching it.”Fortunately for everyone, Gorzelanny’s ego is lagging way behind. He spoke fondly of his two years at KU, and when interviewing him, he came across as just a regular guy who’s finding ways to get batters out better than almost everyone in the National League. No big deal, he implies.Well, it is. Being just 24, left-handed, throwing five different pitches and having the mental makeup that Pittsburgh management is loving, Gorzelanny could have quite a career if injuries stay away. His ERA currently is 2.39, third best in the National League behind Jake Peavy and Brad Penny. It’s been a long time since a KU alum has shown this much promise in the Major Leagues. Be proud of that, Jayhawk fans. Now, let’s get a little more random. When I read Greene’s blog, I usually just dart right to the YouTube links because the only thing he really knows is awesome Internet videos. I’ll try to be his equal here. * [The Homer Spin][5]. One of my favorite Simpsons moments of all time. * Many of you will remember [this ending][6] from the UMKC-Chicago State basketball game a few years back. Absolutely amazing. (Keep watching, there’s more than one shot). * The [best beat boxer ever][7] resides in France, it appears. By the way, did you know [Michael Jackson][8] can beat box, too? (Before you start with the jokes, just stop). * Can’t have a laughing session without a [Family Guy clip][9]. * No video here, but I have to finish by giving a shout-out to the Longview Community College baseball team, who was playing Thursday for the NJCAA Division-II national title. Yours truly was an outfielder for Longview in 2000 before hanging the cleats up. I’m a proud alum today. That’s it for me. Greene should be back next week to make the world right again. See ya.
