Consistently inconsistent

**-One week, two rivals, two wins** for the Kansas University men’s basketball team. Not only that, but two very convincing wins, defeating [Kansas State][1] and [Missouri][2] by an average margin of 22.5 points. With the exception of the first six minutes in Columbia, the Jayhawks were dominant during the other 74 minutes they were on the court. Some highlights, as a refresher:**_*Julian Wright drops a career-high 33 points_** on Missouri, becoming the first KU player to top the 30-point barrier since Wayne Simien did it in the 2004-05 season, scoring 32 in a home win over Oklahoma State.**_*Brandon Rush puts away 21_** while playing the Robin role to Wright’s Batman Saturday afternoon. On top of that, it came on 8-of-10 shooting and a 3-for-3 performance from three-land. He also helped Wright lead KU’s 24-2 run early on in the game, which came right after Kalen Grimes making a poster starring himself and Sasha Kaun on a thunderous dunk to put the Tigers up 16-8.**_*Sherron Collins continues to be KU’s most productive guard_** in Big 12 play. This week, he scored 25 points and dished out 14 assists in the two contests combined.**_*Defensively, The Jayhawks held K-State leading scorer Cartier Martin_** scoreless in the first half, and second-leading scorer David Hoskins scoreless in the second half. Saturday, Mizzou’s Marshall Brown was dealt a goose egg in the point column in the final 20 minutes. But if there’s been one constant with the 2006-07 Jayhawks, it’s that you know this can’t continue, though it’s almost a certainty it will resume after another probable blip on the radar. This team’s tag so far is that it’s been consistently inconsistent.Want some reference points? Here:**_*After [knocking off then-No. 1 Florida][3], 82-80 in Las Vegas_** on Nov. 25, exactly a week later the Jayhawks let a late lead melt away at the hands of DePaul’s Sammy Mejia, [dropping the road contest][4], 64-57.**_*The Jayhawks’ second-best two-game stretch_**, a [70-54 road win][5] on Jan. 7 at South Carolina followed up three days later with a [30-point jolting of Oklahoma State][6], was quickly forgotten about as KU struggled to hold off [Iowa State][7] and [Missouri][8], followed up with a sluggish [69-64 loss at Texas Tech][9].**_*KU at one point leads 43-8 at Nebraska_** on Jan. 29 before [winning by 20][10], and five days later lets another one slip through its fingers in the final minutes to Acie Law and Texas A&M, [69-66][11].Are you catching a theme here? If not, let us talk about individuals.Throw on how dominant Darrell Arthur was to start the year before falling off for awhile. Then dash in how splendid Mario Chalmers was playing just before conference season, compared to how slumped his shooting has been during 10 Big 12 games. The best example might be Julian Wright, who can have 33 points and 12 rebounds like he did Saturday, just two weeks after lying on the floor in embarassment after showboating backfired. Got the drift?OK, so does it mean the Jayhawks are doomed at Colorado Wednesday night? Probably not, because Colorado is still bad…very bad.Does it mean people should be willing away their possessions and needing to be talked off the ledge if KU loses another game before the NCAA Tournament. No, no and no.Fans clamor for consistency from this team, but guess what? It’s not coming. That’s just not this team’s style. And in college basketball as of late, that’s just not the way it goes. There’s too much talent spread out too wide for there to be such thing as a dominant team anymore. Florida of a year ago is a prime example. Before winning 11 straight games to close out the season – including three SEC tournament games and six NCAA Tourney contests – the Gators dropped four of six. That said, no one expected the run they made in the tournament. At this point, it just depends on which team hits the hot streak at the right time. That’s where KU is dangerous, because the Jayhawks are certainly capable of being a Florida-type team come Big 12 tournament time and the NCAAs.The inchoate regular season therefore means much less than some make it out to, especially for a team like KU, which barring a 15-loss season will be a shoe-in for the field of 64 every year.**-I’ve got to say though, in my first trip to Mizzou Arena**, I was pretty impressed with it. The overall atmosphere takes a bit of a hit because of how high the roof goes above the scoreboard, and that takes away from the decibel level a tad. But the huge windows up top make for a great gameday scene, kind of like the smaller ones in the end zones of Allen Fieldhouse.Mike Anderson seems like he has the Tigers headed in the right direction, and having a facility like that, with a beautiful practice court located down the tunnel from the locker room, that’s going to be an interesting program to watch over the next couple of years. **-The Mizzou women’s team played at 6 p.m. Saturday**, and a couple of tens of folks hung around to watch the Tigers take on Oklahoma State, and I couldn’t help but glance at the game here and there while finishing some work up in the media area located about halfway up the stands. And man, Mizzou was not good. That means when the Tigers come for a Valentine’s Day showdown in Allen Fieldhouse to take on the suddenly resurgent Kansas women, the Jayhawks could actually make a Big 12 winning streak come to fruition.Who would’ve thunk it about a week ago? The Jayhawks’ [70-68 overtime win over Colorado][12] wasn’t necessarily a huge surprise, seeing how the Buffs were 0-8 on the road this season entering the game, but true to form predicted in _The Greene Room_ on [Jan. 3][13], the Kansas women beat someone they weren’t supposed to, by [knocking off Texas][14], 50-49, on Shaq Mosley’s last-second layin Saturday night. Most KU fans missed that one, still hungover from the afternoon’s men’s game. That’s understandable. After having watched Bonnie’s crew for a few games during conference play, here are a couple of observations:**_*Danielle McCray needs to keep coming off of the bench_**, even if she’s playing some of the best basketball on the team as of late as far as intensity and rebounding goes. She’s found a niche to settle into for the rest of the season. McCray notched her first double-double of the season Saturday, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.**_*Kelly Kohn needs to put the jumpshot away somewhat_**. Her shot has struggled, but she’s been too important of a playmaker for Henrickson to sit on the bench. She’s got good offensive instincts, but her 34.2 percent shooting this season has been a sorespot.**_*Bonnie needs to keep the young guns in the game_**. It’s become commonplace to see three and four freshmen on the floor at the same time as of late, and while experience might be lacking, the freshmen seem to play a quicker brand of basketball, which has made scoring much easier in the transition, as this team just isn’t as capable of scoring in bunches in the halfcourt set as it has in the past few years.**-Maybe the neatest story of the weekend at KU**, though, was the Kansas baseball team [playing in the wee hours of the morning][15] in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.Weather forced the Jayhawks to cancel the weekend home series with South Dakota State, and instead, KU met SDSU roughly halfway up in what a buddy of mine called the Kemper Arena of Major League ballparks.Still, it’s pretty cool. But due to scheduling, the Jayhawks played a double-dip Saturday morning at 1:30 and 3:30 a.m., and then finished the second game of that [split double-header][16] Sunday morning and played the rubber game starting at 3:30 a.m. [A 4-1 win Sunday morning][17] gave KU the series win and a 7-1 record to start the season. The funny thing is that the listed attendance for the first game of the series was 22, while the second game drew 26. I wonder where those four people stumbled in from? Did they still serve beer through the seventh inning? Just curious.**-Finally, some fun YouTube clips** for you to enjoy until next week:**_*I got a kick out of [this][18]_** after seeing it on a message board. It’s some highlights of former Jayhawk Keith Langford, now playing for Valnoli Soresina overseas. Towards the end there’s a pretty sick alley-oop clip. Looks like his knee is healthier now than it was when his KU career finished.**_*Here’s a funny take on [Julian Wright’s missed dunk][19]_** against Colorado on Jan. 27. (Not to pick on him by continuing to bring it up, but this was semi-clever).**_*Speaking of dunks_**, still waiting to see [this][20] from Sherron Collins (He has yet to dunk in a game at KU).**_*This is one I’ve been meaning to add for a couple of weeks_**. Krysten Boogaard, a 6-foot-3 center who is a big part of Bonnie Henrickson’s recruiting class for next season, could bring the physical presence the Jayhawks desperately need inside. Well, that is, assuming physical play runs in the family. Check out [this clip][21] of her brother Derek, who plays for the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. Type in his name on YouTube to see plenty more. It’s pretty obvious he’s quite the enforcer.**_*And, finally, completely not sports-related_**, my cousin Adam sent me [this][22] as I was typing this section, and after showing it to Ryan Wood, it prompted him to say “I feel like I’m the only one who can’t do anything cool.”Until next week, take care.**_KUSports.com editor Ryan Greene can be reached at rgreene@ljworld.com, or by phone at (785) 832-6357._** [1]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/08/sunflower_power/?mens_basketball [2]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/11/border_warrior/?mens_basketball [3]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2006/nov/26/later_gators/?mens_basketball [4]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2006/dec/03/ku_gets_cold_shoulder/?mens_basketball [5]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/jan/08/self_rants_ku_rolls/?mens_basketball [6]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/jan/11/rock_em_sock_em/?mens_basketball [7]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/jan/14/rush_hushes_hilton/?mens_basketball [8]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/jan/16/collins_goes_ballin/?mens_basketball [9]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/jan/21/storm_warning/?mens_basketball [10]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/jan/30/creamed_corn/?mens_basketball [11]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/04/oh_agony/?mens_basketball [12]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/07/jayhawks_win_first_big_12/?womens_basketball [13]: http://www2.kusports.com/blogs/greene_room/2007/jan/03/better_ho_hum/ [14]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/11/ku_women_dance_unlikely_twostep/?womens_basketball [15]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/10/late_night_not_just_basketball/?baseball [16]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/11/late_home_run_leads_kus_first_setback/?baseball [17]: http://www2.kusports.com/news/2007/feb/12/marks_allman_lift_kansas_baseball/?baseball [18]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbF0tF2Ocos [19]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3fWwtB9GJ4 [20]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSicFi6r0BU [21]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfl75-WaV6A [22]: http://1dawg.com/video?m=4sfz6vblsnzz
