The Texas Tech women’s basketball team couldn’t handle Kansas seniors Zakiyah Franklin and Holly Kersgieter and No. 21 Kansas knocked off Texas Tech 77-59 Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas (12-1 overall, 2-0 Big 12) wasted no time putting the pressure on Texas Tech (12-3, 0-2) in the paint as senior center Taiyanna Jackson crashed the glass early and often in the first quarter. Jackson pulled down 10 rebounds in the first quarter alone, more than the entire Texas Tech team combined.

The Jayhawks played aggressive defense in the first quarter, showing strong interior defense led by Jackson. KU held Texas Tech to just five first-quarter points on 2-of-11 shooting.

Kersgieter was red hot from the floor in the first quarter, recording 11 of her 26 points and shooting 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc. Kersgieter scored 11 of the Jayhawks’ 15 first quarter points and KU led 15-5 after one quarter.

While Kersgieter led the offense in the first quarter, it was senior guard Zakiyah Franklin who found her rhythm in the second quarter. Franklin scored 11 of her 26 points on 5-of-7 shooting while playing all 10 minutes in the second quarter, bolstering KU’s offense as she attacked the painted area.

Kansas found itself with an advantage on the inside, outscoring TTU 18-8 in the first half in the paint to hold a 14-point lead going into halftime.

Kersgieter and Franklin continued their hot shooting in the third quarter, leading the team in scoring with seven and six points, respectively. But the Red Raiders stuck with the Jayhawks through the entire quarter and outscored KU 20-19 in the quarter, staring down a 13-point deficit heading into the final quarter.

KU put the game away in the fourth quarter with the help of Franklin and Kersgieter, who combined for another 12 points in the quarter. The Jayhawks outscored Texas Tech by five in the final quarter to secure the 77-59 win on their home floor.

Kersgieter and Franklin both came up just short of their career highs in points. Jackson recorded yet another double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 18 rebounds while adding five blocks and two steals to her stat line.

Senior guard Bre’Amber Scott led Texas Tech with 21 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 8-of-8 from the free throw line, while redshirt-freshman guard Jasmine Shavers (11 points) was the only other TTU player to score in double figures.

Kansas attacked the paint all night long, scoring a whopping 44 points inside, outscoring the Lady Raiders by 18 points in that area. The Jayhawks’ offense fired on all cylinders throughout the game, shooting 50% from the floor and 6-of-18 from downtown, giving KU its second win in Big 12 Conference play.

Next up, Kansas will take on the No. 23 Baylor Bears (10-3) in Allen Fieldhouse at 4 p.m. Saturday.
