Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Feb. 23 to March 1, the selections are Tayton Klein and Shiyun Lai.
Tayton Klein, track and field
Klein, a senior, won a Big 12 title in the heptathlon at the indoor track championships in Lubbock, Texas. His score of 5,923 was the best in school history, driven by his success in the high jump, pole vault, 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.
Shiyun Lai, swimming and diving
The junior Lai continued her decorated career with another Big 12 championship in the 1-meter dive in Greensboro, North Carolina as she scored 338.70. She was also the runner-up in the 3-meter dive and set a school record in platform diving.
