KUsports.com Athletes of the Week: David Coit and Mason Meinershagen

By Journal-World Sports Staff     Feb 2, 2025

Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.

For the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, the selections are David Coit and Mason Meinershagen.

David Coit, men’s basketball

The super-senior reserve guard broke out of a lengthy offensive slump to shoot 6-for-15 (40%) from beyond the arc between a win over UCF and loss at Baylor while averaging 10 points per game, after making just four combined 3s over his prior 10 games. Coit also played at least 20 minutes in both games, which he had not done since Dec. 8.

Mason Meinershagen, track and field

Only a sophomore, the St. Louis native Meinershagen broke KU’s indoor record in the women’s pole vault by clearing 4.47 meters at the Dr. Rick McGuire Invitational in Columbia, Missouri, on Friday. The mark was good enough to place her at No. 4 in the nation, according to KU’s press release.
