Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of March 31-April 7, the selections are Jackson Hauge and Sidney Smith.
Jackson Hauge, baseball
The graduate transfer from Minnesota State, Mankato, has taken the Big 12 Conference by storm this season, much like the Jayhawks as a whole, and added another two home runs to his league-leading total during KU’s unbeaten week. On the whole, between KU’s midweek win over South Dakota State and road sweep of UCF he went 7-for-17 (.412) with 10 RBIs. He now leads the league in both home runs (14) and RBIs (46).
Sidney Smith, track and field
One of four victorious Jayhawks on Thursday at the John Jacobs Invite in Norman, Oklahoma, Smith won the 400-meter hurdles while competing in her home state. The sophomore from Tulsa finished with a time of 59.80 seconds to earn first place. KU in fact occupied the top three spots in the 400 hurdles, with Addison Brooks and Kaleigh Frazier just behind Smith.
