Kansas celebrates after scoring a goal against Vanderbilt during the home opener at Rock Chalk Park on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023.

Arkansas State took as many shots Thursday night as Kansas scored goals, and the Jayhawks kept their unbeaten nonconference run going by shutting out the Red Wolves 3-0 at Rock Chalk Park.

Hallie Klanke assisted on a second-minute strike for Lexi Watts and a 52nd-minute drive across the face of the goal for Brie Severns, her second two-assist match in a row. Freshman Montelene Dymond added a third goal off a deflection from an Arkansas State defender on an ambitious cross-field pass by teammate Siera Herbert to round out the scoring.

Each player scored her second goal of the year.

Arkansas State goalie Damaris Deschaine stopped eight shots in 90 minutes, but KU took 24 overall, including 12 on target. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks’ keeper Melania Pasar was only called upon for one stop on Tara Lea in the 62nd minute.

Through five games, Klanke leads KU in points (9) with her two goals and five assists, closely followed by Watts (6) and Severns (5). This is also the Jayhawks’ first time going five matches without a loss to open the season since 2018, when they reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

KU will host rival Missouri on Sunday night in a game that was delayed to 7 p.m. due to forecasts of excessive heat. The Tigers are 2-1-1 for this season and will enter off a 5-0 loss at Nebraska on Thursday night.
