Playing without its top two scorers, No. 25 Texas Tech knocked off No. 6 Kansas, 75-67 on Saturday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raiders (11-3 overall, 1-1 Big 12) led for 33:21 of Saturday’s game — compared to just 1:29 for Kansas — and had their way with the Jayhawks in the paint, outscoring KU 44-18 at or near the rim.
The loss ended KU’s eight-game winning streak and dropped the Jayhawks to 12-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play.
Senior guard Ochai Agbaji led the Jayhawks with 24 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range. But he also battled foul trouble throughout most of the second half, sitting for roughly 4 minutes after picking up his fourth foul at the 13:05 mark on a charging call in transition.
Jalen Wilson also topped the 20-point mark for Kansas, hitting 20 points on the nose on 6-of-8 shooting. Wilson started in place of Remy Martin, who played just 12 minutes while still dealing with a sore right knee.
KU senior Mitch Lightfoot again started at the 5 for the Jayhawks, but neither he nor David McCormack were effective in this one, combining for 4 points and 6 rebounds in 24 minutes.
KJ Adams and Zach Clemence also saw time at the 5 for the Jayhawks, but no one in that group was able to put up much resistance against Texas Tech’s size, length and aggression.
The Red Raiders led by 14 midway through the second half and watched a 2-3 KU zone defense help trim the lead all the way down to four points in the final 2 minutes. But every time KU needed to get a stop, it seemed as if Tech had an answer on offense.
Next up, the Jayhawks will play host to Iowa State on Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
