The Kansas women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 on Sunday, with the Jayhawks’ 83-60 win over Tennessee State at Allen Fieldhouse.

Just as she did in KU’s season opener a few days earlier, senior guard Aniya Thomas led the team in scoring, going for a game-high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting.

Thomas, who is now averaging 22 points per game, was one of four Jayhawks who put up double figures against the Tigers (2-1). KU sophomore forward Ioanna Chatzileonti (16), junior guard Zakiyah Franklin (13) and sophomore forward Katrine Jessen (10) provided some balance to KU’s scoring.

A 16-0 run in the first quarter helped the Jayhawks set the tone for a comfortable home win, in which they led by as many as 31 points in the second half.

“We did a good job executing against their pressure,” head coach Brandon Schneider said. “I was pleased early with how we executed when we were able to get into some numbers situations.”

High-percentage baskets made KU’s day easier, and the Jayhawks outscored TSU 44-18 in the paint and 25-4 in fastbreak points.

KU shot 47% from the floor overall, but went 3-for-17 (18%) on 3-pointers.

With the help of junior center Taiyanna Jackson’s 13 rebounds, KU had a 53-37 advantage on the glass.

This is the fifth season in a row KU has won its opening two games on the schedule.

The Jayhawks’ four-game home stand to open this year’s calendar continues on Wednesday, when Omaha (0-2) visits the fieldhouse (7 p.m., ESPN+).
