I read the WSU AD said he wants to double the $600,000 they paid their last coach

Jeff Coffman 10 years, 7 months ago

I think Leach is going to go for about $2.4MM, he is so out of his league and has kicked himself hard if he doesn't land Leach.

if the k.u. a.d. dont have contract with leach .he should .be fired.

because he had plenty of time im aidot and after any the last several game i would ask my self what coach would fill stadium our ad wants kiss up to the stoops .that is what got us in this poistion in the first place makei it happen. fans want leach

Jeff Coffman 10 years, 7 months ago

There are a lot of coaches out there, but to tell you the truth Fedora does not excite me. He is coming from a non-BCS conference and hasn't recruited Texas well.

I heard a lot about Leach, but the darkhorse names they talked about didn't bring any excitement either.

I'll look forward to some other thoughts.

The real question out there is what coach do we need to have to be in the mix in 5 years when conference realignment heats up again?

Dillon Davis 10 years, 7 months ago

Yeah I think Matt has mentioned or at least other sites have mentioned that Fedora has strong Texas recruiting ties but when you look at his last few signing classes they are all from Miss. or Alabama or somewhere in Southeast part of the country. What gives?

Matt Tait 10 years, 7 months ago

Previous jobs as both Texas HS coach and Oklahoma State assistant left him with good ties in Texas...

Texas isn't a big focus for Southern Miss recruiting, but Fedora could do good work down there if he was back at a school that recruited Texas harder.

Dillon Davis 10 years, 7 months ago

Matt Tait is awesome because he responds and answers our comments. He is interacting with his commentators and that makes us feel us heard and appreciated. Thank you for the clarification sir and keep up the good journalism work!

Hey, Jesse, Matt---

I would love for zany Mike Leach to take over the Jayhawk football program so you two zany guys could keep us posted on his every move---LOL. Seriously though, I saw the "60 minutes" episode on Mike Leach (again). I had seen it when it originally aired, and thought at the time that this guy would really be fun to play for. You can't deny that he has knocked off some of the big boys in the Big 12 South. I am not getting my hopes up but think that SZ is smart keeping everything "in house." Thanks for the podcast---enjoyed it, as always!

Matt, I want to hear your opinion on the open or possible open NCAA Head Football jobs. Rank these open jobs from the BEST to WORSE:

Penn State, Ol Miss, North Carolina, Texas AM, Miss State, Memphis, AZ State, Washington State, Colorado, UCLA and Kansas. Am I missing any?

I will spot you Penn State starting as the BEST and Memphis is the WORSE. Fill in the blanks for the rest... Where does Kansas land?

Matt Tait 10 years, 7 months ago

All right... I'll give it a whirl. Colorado's not open and Illinois is. So is Tulane. And Mississippi State's not officially open yet either... I'll include 'em though. Same with A&M.

You're putting Penn State at the top so I'll start there. Here goes nothing:

Penn State Texas A&M Mississippi State UCLA Arizona State Kansas Ole Miss Illinois Washington State Tulane Memphis

Middle of the pack, it looks like. Just a quick ranking after a first look.

About where you thought?

Vernon Riggs 10 years, 7 months ago

This is what I posted on 27-Nov before Meyer...

We are close. I didn't have Tulane, Miss St or now, North Carolina in the mix. All but Miss St would be below Kansas. You have a much higher opinion of AZ State than I do.

Here are the jobs that are open and might be open in order

  1. Ohio State
  2. Penn State
  3. Texas AM
  4. UCLA
  5. Ol Miss
  6. Kansas
  7. IIllinois
  8. AZ State
  9. Colorado
  10. Memphis State

I think Georgia doesn't come open, but if it does it slides into #4.

Nope. He's all about KState. He's just waiting for Snyder to "retire" and they will definitely get him only when Snyder is ready.

fancy80 10 years, 7 months ago

one of my K state friends (feels weird saying that) told me that they hate Venables because of the way he left Manhattan and the stuff he said about Manhattan after he left. He said they would never go after Venables. They are terrified of the thought of us getting Leach. They are saying Leach won't come here, but I think secretly they are crapping their pants....

Leach was at the top of my list anyway, but that makes me want him as our head coach even more!

Randy Bombardier 10 years, 7 months ago

yeah, I am not so sure about that either. Gary Patterson looks like he would be the heir if he wants it.

mjlindsm 10 years, 7 months ago

And still no basketball spodcasters...

I don't care about Leach's alleged baggage. He can't be any worse than Mangino, and I thought Mangino was one heck of a coach. Lew shot KU in our proverbial feet when he fired him. I think Leach will bring a lot of excitement back to Lawrence, and immediately. Sign him, and sign him now.

jayhawk02 10 years, 7 months ago

I have a question for all of those who think Mangino shouldn't have been fired, yet were more than happy to see Gill get the boot. If Mangino was such a great coach, how do you explain the colossal collapse his last year? Are your memories failing so much that you forgot about losing 7 straight games and sitting at home during the bowl season? How in the world do you explain blowing the leads we had at Texas Tech and the lead against misery? Say what you want you want about Gill, but Mangino was absolutely no better. IMHO.

oldvet 10 years, 7 months ago

Mangino was 5-7 his last year... with a QB who was marginal due to injury. If you think that a star QB injury can't impact a team, take a look at the Colts and Chiefs. Mangino wasn't fired because of his win-loss record, but because he was a meanie to a couple of whiners. And then there was Mangino's second season when he went to a bowl game, using players left over from Terry Allen. Gill's only hope was to keep the Big-12 at nine teams and to schedule 4 chumps for the non-conference. Then he would have a chance at 4-5 wins. But never a bowl game... unless he bought a ticket.

Jim Williamson 10 years, 7 months ago

Ummm... you are aware that Mark Mangino used to work at KU, right?
