The highly touted transfer from Arizona State was listed by some as the nation’s most talented player to change schools this offseason. He committed to KU on May 17 and announced that he was pulling his name from the NBA draft pool on July 6.

KU shared some video footage of Martin’s arrival at the team’s McCarthy Hall dormitory on Twitter, and in it Martin’s father, Sam Martin, discussed how coming to Kansas was a “full circle” moment for his son.

“Not a lot of times in life do you get a chance to do something over, like I wonder what would’ve happened if I’d have done this, this and this,” Sam Martin said in the video. “Remy always wanted to come here when he was recruited here as a freshman, so now for it to come full circle and him to be able to come back here and finish here (he gets) to answer those questions.”

Sam Martin said the chance to play for Kansas coach Bill Self and at a program like KU gives his son an opportunity to see what would have happened “if I would have went right instead of left.”

“Now, (he gets) the opportunity to answer those questions,” Sam Martin said. “So it’s great.”

On Day 1, Remy Martin steps in as the most accomplished college basketball player on KU’s current roster. He scored nearly 2,000 points in his four seasons at Arizona State. He was a two-time all-Pac-12 first team selection. And he was the Pac-12’s freshman of the year during the 2017-18 season and a second-team all-conference selection as a sophomore.

While all of those individual honors made him a household name throughout college basketball, the new KU point guard’s main goal for his final season is simple.

“Every time you think of Kansas, you think of, you know, the best,” he said in the arrival video. “The culture here holds up. I’m just happy to be a part of it and I just want to go win.”

In one scene during the short Twitter video, Remy Martin was shown saying hello to KU senior Ochai Agbaji.

In addition to being two of the better-known, more-highly-visible players on the 2021-22 KU roster, the two veterans and projected starters also will be roommates.

Agbaji recently talked about what adding Martin to this roster would mean for KU’s hopes of contending for a national title during the upcoming season.

“With him having the experience he had at Arizona State and playing in the Pac-12, it’s good to have that,” Agbaji said during a break at a recent Washburn Basketball satellite camp at Eudora High.

Agbaji said he talked with his new teammate just a couple of times this offseason. And on the night that he committed to Kansas back in May, Remy Martin said the fact that he didn’t really know any of the current Jayhawks that well was “exciting” to him because of the opportunities it presented to build something from the ground up.

The last time Agbaji played with a player who was as dynamic as Remy Martin was his sophomore season. That year, Devon Dotson put up All-American numbers. The former Jayhawk who played on a two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls organization last season blew by defenders in half-court sets and finished at the rim with regularity.

When getting to all the way to the rim wasn’t an option, Dotson had players like Agbaji to kick the ball out to. As a result, Agbaji and others often found plenty of open space to step into as they released their jumpers from the perimeter.

Agbaji sees similar things ahead with his new teammate.

“He knows how to score the ball and create for others,” Agbaji said. “He can go get his own and put pressure on the defense that way, too.”

“Just by potential (I can see that we can be really good),” Agbaji said recently. “But we haven’t even started working yet and haven’t got Remy here yet. Once we get him here and we start going and stuff, I think it’s going to be fun.”
