The Kansas softball team earned one win, while losing the other three contests, during the opening weekend of the 2021 campaign.
KU’s lone win of the LSU Tournament, which took place inside Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, La, was a 4-2 victory over Central Arkansas on Saturday. Kansas was swept by McNeese State on Friday, dropping a 9-8 decision in the first game and suffering a 6-5 defeat in the second outing.
After defeating Central Arkansas, the Jayhawks (1-3) were then handed a 5-3 defeat by LSU on Saturday. KU was slated to face Duke in the final game of the weekend, but that contest was ultimately canceled due to the threat of inclement weather.
Junior catcher Shelby Gayre and junior shortstop Sydnee Ramsey both led KU’s offensive attack with six hits apiece. Gayre delivered six RBI and two home runs in her 15 at-bats this past weekend, while Ramsey recorded four RBI to go along with one homer and one double in her 14 trips to the plate.
Senior outfielder Train Travieso and junior infielder Morgyn Wynne both clubbed a homer for the Jayhawks as well. Sophomore Ashlyn Anderson registered a double to record KU’s only other extra-base hit on the weekend.
Sophomore pitcher Tatum Goff was credited with the victory in the circle. She appeared in two games in the opening weekend, which included one start. Goff finished with 11 strikeouts and gave up three earned runs in nine total innings.
Kansas will be back in action next weekend for the North Texas tournament in Frisco, Texas. KU will face South Dakota State at 3:30 p.m. Friday to begin the four-game slate.
