White team nose tackle Sam Burt closes in on Blue Team quarterback Torry Locklin during Late Night Under the Lights on Saturday, April, 13, 2019 at Memorial Stadium.

It won’t be called “Late Night Under the Lights,” and there will be no postgame Rick Ross concert, but there will be fans at the first Kansas football spring game in two years.

KU announced Tuesday night that the May 1 open scrimmage will kick off at 6 p.m. at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, with fans able to attend for free.

Seating will be first come, first served, with socially distanced small pods available, and all fans being asked to watch from sections 1-8.

Just as was the case during the 2020 season, KU isn’t permitting tailgating prior to the event. Parking lots and gates to the stadium will open an hour before kickoff, at 5 p.m. COVID-19 safety protocols used at the venue last season remain in place.

The spring game also will be streamed live on ESPN+, and available on the Jayhawk Radio Network.

The Jayhawks didn’t even have one spring practice, let alone a spring game in 2020, as the pandemic wiped out the entire schedule.

KU’s last spring game was on April 13, 2019, and served as an unofficial debut for then head coach Les Miles. KU branded the event as “Late Night Under the Lights” and rapper Rick Ross performed following the scrimmage, mimicking the format of the KU basketball program’s annual preseason event, “Late Night in the Phog.”
