Nine players from Kansas earned spots on the first- and second-team academic All-Big 12 softball squads announced by the Big 12 Conference on Friday.
Seniors Sam Dellinger (majoring in psychology), Becki Monaghan (business, marketing), Madison Sykes (business, management and leadership) and Mandy Roberts (masters of accounting) along with junior Tarin Travieso (exercise science) and sophomore Shelby Gayre (exercise science), Macy Omli (pre-business) and Morgyn Wynne (journalism, strategic communications) were named to the first team.
Senior Shelby Hughston (liberal arts and sciences) earned second-team honors.
Travieso was one of just three softball athletes to post a 4.0 GPA, joining Josie Bower of Baylor and Chelsea Alexander of Oklahoma State.
Monaghan and Sykes earned first-team distinction for the third consecutive year while Dellinger and Roberts made the first team for the second straight season.
“I am so proud of our athletes who are committed to being successful in the classroom,” KU coach Jennifer McFalls said in a release. “We have some ladies with very demanding academic schedules and they never make excuses when it comes down to time management, practice and balancing the life of a student-athlete.”
To earn first-team honors, student-athletes have to maintain a GPA of 3.2 or better, while second-team honorees are required to hold a GPA between 3.0 and 3.19.
Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
