Mike GunnoeUniversity of Kansas fans holding season tickets for upcoming KU sporting events now have assurances from the athletic department that their investment is safe.
On Wednesday afternoon, KU Athletic Director Jeff Long sent an email to donors announcing the details of a ticket assurance plan for all season ticket holders.
According to the email, the plan was put in place to “ease any apprehension (fans) may have and assist (fans) in making ticket purchase and donation decisions.”
The plan states that if KU games are canceled, postponed or played with restricted fan access, Kansas fans will have three options.
The first is a 100% credit for future ticket purchases for the games missed.
The second is the option of transferring the ticket balance to KU’s Williams Education Fund for a fully tax deductible donation.
And the third is to receive a refund for the tickets of the games impacted.
The email also provided a hint at how many fans might be allowed into David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium this fall, starting with the season opener on Sept. 5.
“We have been advised and expect to have capacity options at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium between 50-100%,” Long said in the email, noting that a final decision would not be made until early August.
Discussions about capacity at Allen Fieldhouse for the 2020-21 men’s basketball season remain ongoing.
Because season tickets are tied to Williams Education Fund donations through a minimum annual contribution, the plan also outlined details for WEF donations in the event that games are impacted by COVID-19 pandemic.
If games are canceled, postponed or played with restricted fan access, donations will become tax deductible with receipts available upon request.
In addition, donors who do not feel comfortable attending games during the 2020-21 academic year for football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball will hold their seats for the 2021-22 seasons as long as they maintain or increase their 2020 membership level with the Williams Education Fund.
In late May, Long said KU football’s season ticket sales had reached a 90% renewal rate from 2019, though no number of total tickets was given.
Season ticket packages for both football and men’s basketball will remain available for purchase through Kansas Athletics through June 30.
