Jayhawks Steward, Chen set records, win Big 12 titles

Day three of the Big 12 Championships marked the third day in a row a University of Kansas swimmer set a new program record, and this time it came with an individual conference championship.

KU sophomore Kate Steward won the 100-yard breaststroke final Friday evening in Morgantown, W.Va., where she finished in a school record time of 1:00.34.

The Jayhawks’ successful day also included a 3-meter diving championship for freshman Jiayu Chen, who set a Big 12 meet record with her 384.6 score.

In other finals Friday, KU sophomore Greta Olsen finished second in the 100 fly, junior Dannie Dilsaver placed third in the 400 IM, senior Jenny Nusbaum swam to a third-place finish in the 200 free and sophomore Dewi Blose took third in the 100 backstroke.

KU’s 200 free relay team of seniors Carly Straight and Nusbaum, freshman Autumn Looney and junior Manon Manning completed the night with a second-place finish.

KU finished the day in second place in team points with 573, trailing Texas 712, heading into Saturday’s events.
