The Kansas softball team earned its first win of the 2020 campaign.
In the first of two games during the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday, the Jayhawks (1-3) rolled to an 8-0 win over Seattle. Kansas then suffered a 10-2 loss to No. 12 Tennessee, marking the team’s third defeat to a ranked foe in the opening weekend.
Against Seattle (0-3), KU pitcher Hailey Reed spun six scoreless innings to improve to 1-0 on the year. She allowed four hits, while striking out three batters and walking two. Catcher Shelby Gayre drove in three runs to lead the offensive attack. Shortstop Sydnee Ramsey and first baseman Becki Monaghan each recorded two hits as well.
In the loss to Tennessee, Ramsey and second baseman Miranda Rodriguez combined for four of KU’s five hits. UT (2-0) scored in every inning except for the fifth, while pouring in four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Kansas will close out the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday, when it squares off with Utah. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
