Quick recap: KU suffers 12-7 loss to Coastal Carolina

Kansas head coach Les Miles talks to his team during a timeout against Coastal Carolina Saturday night at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on Sept. 7, 2019.

To fully understand what plagued Kansas during its 12-7 loss to Coastal Carolina, look no further than one single play early in the fourth quarter.

On 4th-and-4 from Coastal Carolina’s 17-yard line, the Jayhawks appeared poised for some more fourth-quarter magic. They trailed 12-7, and opted against kicking a field goal Saturday night at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

The only problem was that Les Miles and company wasn’t certain what it should run on its most important play of the night. And that is because the offense had struggled to get much going, even with the return of sophomore running back Pooka Williams Jr.

So Miles called a timeout to mull things over. Then, after the Jayhawks trotted out a similar formation, the Chanticleers called a timeout. Miles then burned KU’s final timeout with 14:22 remaining before the snap.

After back-to-back-to-back timeouts, the play finally happened. But the result was anticlimactic.

Redshirt senior quarterback Carter Stanley initially appeared to line up under center before falling back to shotgun. He received the snap and immediately rolled right. Stanley, who had already thrown two interceptions on the run, decided to gain the necessary yardage with his legs.

Coastal Carolina (0-1) was all over him, though, and Stanley’s lunging effort was nowhere close to converting.

The Chanticleers then ate up the next eight minutes of clock before missing a field goal attempt. KU’s last-ditch effort for a comeback drive ended a few plays later. The Jayhawks fell to 1-1 under Miles due to their inability to get anything going on the offensive end other than the game’s opening drive.

On the first possession, Kansas jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 41-yard touchdown run by Khalil Herbert, who bounced to the outside on his first carry of the night. Coastal Carolina scored with 41 seconds left in the first half on a 20-yard touchdown reception by junior running back CJ Marable.

The Chanticleers took the lead for good on an 8-yard touchdown run by Marable with 07:58 left in the third quarter. In the end, the Jayhawks mustered just 5.0 yards per play. They were also 0-for-3 on fourth down in the loss, which included a questionable double reverse call on 4th-and-1.

11:32 — Khalil Herbert 41 run. Jacob Borcila kick. Eight-play drive for 65 yards, in 3:28. (KU 7, CCU 0.)

0:41 — C.J. Marable 20 pass from Fred Payton. Massimo Biscardi kick failed. Six-play drive for 64 yards, in 2:00. (KU 7, CCU 6.)

7:58 — Marable 8 run. Bryce Carpenter pass failed. Seven-play drive for 44 yards, in 3:27. (CCU 12, KU 7.)

wow-what a game to witness. les is less. 🤷‍♂️

Miles may have just lost most of next year’s recruits with that display. I was really convinced that this year would be different. Is there such a thing as coaching dementia?

Doug Roberts 2 years, 11 months ago

Another bad coaching hire? Sure as hell feels like the last 3 hires. #@&%!

Matt Gauntt 2 years, 11 months ago

Please drive 80 miles to the west and see if they want you as a fan.

With silly comments like that you don't deserve to be a KU fan.

Sure......bad hire.....One of five active coaches with a national championship.....but hey, I bet you would do a much better job as coach.

Doug Roberts 2 years, 11 months ago

So being okay with losing to Coastal freakin' Carolina WOULD make me worthy of being a KU football fan?! That program "80 miles west" seems to have made the right coaching hire. Nothing silly about my comment. This National Championship coach made some boneheaded mistakes and lost to a Sun Belt conference team (their first victory EVER against a power 5 school) with superior talent. No different than Gill, Weiss, or Beaty.

Dale Rogers 2 years, 11 months ago

Oh, for crying out loud. Yeah, it was bad, but it's way too early to condemn anyone, even though the terrible play today makes it hard to not do so. I'll give it more time. I did expect more than I saw today, but I'll wait another couple of games to make my personal decisions.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 11 months ago

If we only had a decent coach. Beaty is awful....oops l guess l can't use that excuse any more. A coach is as only as good as the talent around him (Beaty exception) Who said 5 or 6 wins? Until KU gets a QB, a REAL talent at the position they are limited. Give . the young talent time to mature and let the Beaty recruits move on and for sure this will take a few years. Carter was iffy against Indiana St. but bad against CC. He has major limitations. Last week was nice now Les knows he has real work to do. Which is a good thing.

Dane Pratt 2 years, 11 months ago

Never thought Carter was great but believed he was good enough to make the offense competitive but after two unimpressive performances against our weakest opponents I have second thoughts.

Dane Pratt 2 years, 11 months ago

This decade has got to be one of the sorriest excuses for a P5 football program in the history of college football. I know there have been worse but you really have to scour the history books to find them. 17-93 to date with losses to powerhouses like North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Nichols State and Coastal Carolina.

Steven Haag 2 years, 11 months ago

Set back and pop up some popcorn. It was a 5 year contract. Yes, 5 years. I do agree that it is too early to jump ship, but tonight wasn’t pretty. It’s quite entertaining to watch those hailing Les Miles as the second coming, scratch their heads. I just hope we can keep half of our recruits......and not the 2 star and low 3 star......keep half of our good recruits.

Barry Weiss 2 years, 11 months ago

wow, that game really sucked. I'd say we go with the other QB next week. and that was supposed to be one of the two games we would win this year. make that one now.

Craig Carson 2 years, 11 months ago

I think people need to give miles some time to get his own players in..this is still essentially the exact same team as last year..though I fear this will be another 2 win year at most

Allin Herring 2 years, 11 months ago

I do believe from a recruiting stand point we have made trwmkondous improvement. But if you use today's game as a barometer I can see no improvement at all. Miles looked like he was lost and not involved the whole game. Who ever called those 2 time outs on 4th down should be fired. The play call for that play was terrible though we were held on that play nut it was not called as I guess the refs were making up for their no call on Ex's 2 point conversion. We also had a stupid call on another 4down call on Pooka reverse. Also any reason besides the two INTwe quit throwing in the 2nd half?

Stephen Johnson 2 years, 11 months ago

Everyone who bashed Beatty and thought Les Miles would be a dramatic improvement were so off target.

Steve Corder 2 years, 11 months ago

I have said all along that you must have a playmaker at QB. It’s more than solid/good stats. It’s an ability to make the plays that wins a game. If Cater starts next week then there’s simply no alternative.

I was expecting progress this game, and sadly could not see any.

Dane Pratt 2 years, 11 months ago

Not only did they not make progress, they took a step backwards.

Brian Skelly 2 years, 11 months ago

We're just talent deficient to the hilt. Yes, all the timeouts looked bad. But what shocked me about it was that we just didnt kick a FG.

Which tells you he has no confidence in our kickers. And the jumbled timeouts tells me he's just not sure who's going to be able to make a play.

I'd let the other kid play QB next week. What do we have to lose?

Brian Wilson 2 years, 11 months ago

True. Our talent is in the Freshmen and Sophomore class. Our Senior class is full of transfers...the majority of which......and if this year continues this way it will be proof that recruiting transfers is a stupid way to go.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 11 months ago

Game against Boston College is going to be U G L Y.

Michael Maris 2 years, 11 months ago

Coach Miles, welcome to Kansas Jayhawks football. Perhaps, you can start a QB who has some athletic abilities next week (ohhhh, lets see now, Miles Kendrick, Torry Locklin come to mind). Obviously, MacVittie hasn't impressed anyone in prior practices.

Layne Pierce 2 years, 11 months ago

The real question is what does Coach Miles do now. What we have is a quarterback who tried to hard. He set the tone for the game with his first interception. A terrible pass. If he was going to throw that then put it in the back of the end zone. Maybe he doesn't have the arm strength.

Still just changing the qb is something that Beatty or the Coach before him would have done, in other words it is just to appease harpers.

I still believe he is going to build a program here, and I will be watching for how he sustains the positive energy he brought with him.

Suddenly Carter Stanley sucks and Pooka Williams is worthless. It is the line stupid. They are terrible. In real program terms the line has to be much better.

Strangely our defense is not as bad as I thought, though still has a ways to go.

This will be a bumpy road, fasten your seat belt.

Michael Sillman 2 years, 11 months ago

The coaching staff might have been able to take some of the pressure off Stanley by letting him throw on first or second down. They seemed to believe that they could pop Williams free for a big one if they kept jamming him into the line often enough. Third and fourth down makes it do or die for the kid at quarterback.

Dirk Medema 2 years, 11 months ago

The one good thing about the game is that it makes for comical comments. schizophrenia.

Chris Condren 2 years, 11 months ago

The Decade of Despair continues. Another embarrassing loss. This team goes 1-11. KU fans have experienced that and much worse.

Bryce Landon 2 years, 11 months ago

The only joke bigger than Kansas losing to Coastal Carolina is that you delusional myopians thought that a coach who lost his touch at LSU had it in him to make Kansas football great again. Putting Les Miles in charge of KU football is like putting Cool Whip on a pile of horse crap.

Just remember, nobody put a gun to your head and told you that you had to be fans of this perennial dumpster fire of a football program. You all could do what I did and find another team to root for - one that's actually be worth rooting for.

At Iowa, we've had the same coach for 20 years. He's been to more bowl games in that span (16) than Kansas has in its entire pathetic existence (12). His Hawkeye teams play smart, disciplined, tough-nosed football and generally do not shoot themselves in the foot time after time. Just yesterday, they kept Rutgers off the scoreboard in a 30-0 shutout victory. They have a legitimate chance to win the Big 10 West, and perhaps do even more.

But hey, if you want to keep on rooting for your own so-called football team that hasn't won jack since Mangino was ousted and won't win jack ever again, that's your choice.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 11 months ago

Sad little man just looking for attention. When he gets the replies it's a win for him. Sits around the rest of the day with a smile on his face. What a life.

Matt Gauntt 2 years, 11 months ago

He must still live with his mom down in the basement. Mom must not be giving him enough attention these days unless he walks upstairs to get a Hot Pocket.

Dane Pratt 2 years, 11 months ago

C'mon Bryce, admit it. You LOVE KU football. Why else do you keep trolling here?

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 11 months ago

Hey Bryce if you are such a big Iowa fan why do you still keep tabs on KUFB and troll the board after each game. It's sad, your the guy who breaks up with his girlfriend and trolls her Facebook page because you just can't let go. You come here to make fun of the "delusional" people here when it is you who truly have a bigger problem. Stick with Iowa and good luck with that but for you an Iowa fan to troll these boards every week is really sad. You have your own team, what do you care about KUFB? Get a life. I know you'll just come back with your usual lame comments about the fans here, KUFB and such. Save it we've heard your spiel year after year. Smh l truly don't understand people like you.

Matt Gauntt 2 years, 11 months ago

Most of the comments here are disappointing. Generally we have the following types of comments:

  • Les Miles is just as bad as David Beatty.....and Charlie Weis....and every other bad Coach we've ever had
  • Administration has caused this (Yeah....Zenger and the previous admin.....but AD Long has only been here less than a year)
  • Carter Stanley needs to be replaced
  • When does basketball season start (at which time half of you will be calling for Bill Self to be fired like you did last year)

I don't know if anyone commenting here has ever coached a D1 football game win. Guessing 99% of you have never put on pads any higher than High School, let along a D1 game. There are some here that will only be satisfied if we have the second coming of Mangino. I loved Mangino. He did a lot for this program. But if he was going to be the answer to our problems, why hasn't anyone asked him to be their head coach in the last decade? Les Miles is a winning coach. Lighten up, Francis.

I remember the same comments comments about Montell Cozart. He wasn't great here, but left and did pretty well at Boise State, starting a couple games and being a solid backup. Yeah, I guess he was just terrible.

Anyone that thought we were going to waltz into this year and a bowl eligible season has been smoking funny weed....probably the bad stuff you can pick wild along the river.

This was a horrible doubt. I do fault the coaches for blowing sunshine up our O-Line and D-Line's backsides. The line is our biggest challenge for sure.

We have some of the hardest to please, fickle, and gloom and doom fans I have ever seen. How about sitting back a bit and giving this thing the time that everyone knew it would take.

Dane Pratt 2 years, 11 months ago

Not saying Coach Miles won’t eventually turn this program around but after two weeks the coaching staff has failed to prepare this team to play D1 football. K-State wasn’t that much better than us last season and with their new coach they have rolled their first two opponents. And I’m not buying the talent discrepancy argument. It will be the reason we get shellacked against Oklahoma but not a valid excuse to lose to Coastal Carolina.

Joe Baker 2 years, 11 months ago

It’s not that we lost, but who we lose to... I don’t expect this team to win anything any time soon. Most of this team has competed with B12 Power 5 programs and we lose to way lesser teams. It is not too much for this team to represent the B12 and KU against a non-football conference, and expect them to win.
Well, at least West Virginia lost too. Let’s face OU will win their non-con preseason games, except Houston last year. But they may lose and correct their loss. Miles needs to show improvement. We will not get it done in the B12 with 2 and 3 star recruits. And. I don’t see many 4-5 star recruits eager to commit to KU! Pooka is our only shining star. We don’t have a O line to make him holes. He has to create his own plays. I just want improvement, not necessarily win the B12.
