4-star forward Jalen Wilson requests release from Michigan, reopens recruitment

A high school senior who had been off the recruiting market since November is firmly back on the Kansas basketball team’s radar.

A four-star small forward in the Class of 2019, Jalen Wilson announced on Thursday he is requesting a release from his National Letter of Intent with Michigan and reopening his recruitment.

Wilson’s change of heart was a direct result of Monday’s news that John Beilein had left Michigan to become the head coach of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

“I was just in shock,” Wilson told the Detroit Free Press earlier this week.

A few days after contemplating his college basketball future, Wilson announced via Twitter his immediate plans.

"I would also like to thank the coaching staff and the city (of) Ann Arbor for showing an unbelievable amount of love and support,” Wilson wrote in a note he posted to social media. “Due to the sudden head coaching change, I have requested my release from the University of Michigan and will reopen my recruitment."

A top-50 prospect in his class, Wilson is a 6-foot-8 forward from Denton, Texas. He was offered scholarships from several programs, including KU, before signing with the Wolverines this past November.

Assistant coach Jerrance Howard recruited Wilson for KU initially.

According to a report from 247 Sports’ Brian Snow, Wilson plans to look into joining Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma State or Florida, while still considering Michigan as he moves ahead.

As the Jayhawks continue filling out their 2019 recruiting class, one of their top targets, five-star guard R.J. Hampton, appeared intrigued by the announcement from his friend, Wilson.

While retweeting Wilson’s big news, Hampton added, “come to the crib today.”

Hampton, a 6-5 guard from Little Elm, Texas, is reportedly considering committing to KU, Texas Tech or Kentucky.

I read yesterday that Hampton dropping Memphis was not accurate and they are still in the race... Why are they omitted above? Or has he actually ruled them out somewhere?

Even though Memphis might not technically be out of it, getting Tucker as a grad transfers would seem to make them a less than desirable option for the same reason why UK isn't a realistic landing spot..but who really knows what these kids think these days

It would be nice to get both of those Texans.

Things are really falling KU's way right now. RJ and Jalen are really good friends and RJ is all but a lock to KU. But even with RJ's commitment there was still going to be a lack of outside shooting on this team coming in. Wilson could easily fill that void.

Adding Hampton and Wilson and possibly Achiuwa this weekend on top of Enaruna, Braun, McBride, getting Dok and Dotson back, potentially Silvio, and all of a sudden you've got a SCARY team.

I heard that Jalen Wilson & RJ Hampton are good friends... package deal! Coincidentally, as of right now, we have great need of (and scholarships available for) a scoring guard and a forward.

Did I call it or what in a post earlier this week. I had a feeling when Michigan's coach left Jalen Wilson would reopen recruitment, thus opening the door for KU. Let's hope everything falls into place over the next few days.

My understanding is that dui Howard has the inside track on this recruit because he showed him that being completely irresponsible, lying and endangering other people's lives plus gaining 300 pounds after college are all acceptable behaviors. It's the Rock Chalk way.

My guess is that Michigan will try to exact some sort of punishment on this child because, well, he should have known better than to trust a millionaire with no similar constraints. It might upset the norms.

Since we have collectively given up on the idea that there is such a thing as a student athlete, shouldn't we just admit that the Russians have had it right all the time? Test these kids early, get them into a development program with a pedophile coach (that's more an American thing, I admit) and see who is tough enough to come out on top. Cleaner. Simpler. Cheaper. Plus 10's all around.

Here is a challenge for Dollar Bill, DUI Howard, Norm the Fired and Townsend: find some players like Ron Baker or Dean Wade and see if you can identify someone who will dive for a loose ball while also attend classes on Monday without a monitor to ensure attendance. Or feign a back injury to avoid a drop in the draft.

It's a lot to ask, I admit with all of this Facebook and Instagram and Snap Chat. But you are leaders, I'm sure you'll find a way.

Thanks Brett, for that insightful bit of commentary. I'm sure it will go a long way toward enhancing out chances of landing these two young men.

There are people with mental health issues everywhere. I'm sure these young men have met several and recognize what Brett can't on his own. They'll dismiss his lunacy with a sad smile, as we've learned to.

With all due respect, Dean Wade father initially played football at K-State (he left after he sustained an injury and transferred to W. Illinois).

So, Dean has been a K-State fan pretty much his entire life. I would've loved to have seen Dean Wade in Jayhawks uniform. But, it wasn't meant to be. WillIe Cauley-Stein, he's a KS. kid that should've been looked at as an In-State kid who Self's staff should've made a project recruit out of. Coach Cal was willing to take a shot at Cauley-Stein. And, we see how that worked out for Kentucky.

Jay Scott 3 years, 6 months ago's a link to the many excellent mental health providers in the Lawrence area.

Someone from this group could help you deal with your unmanaged anger and delusions of grandeur.

Please take the first step. Call. Many even accept Medicaid.

Was this a drunken post or are you just a complete A$$?

Precious just picked Memphis. We really need the RJ Hampton/ Jalen Wilson combo. Come on down fellas!!!

Recruits are avoiding Self and KU like the plague. Self is washed up and wrecks NBA prospects. The longer he stays, the worse the program will get

There was a stench of $$ following Achoowhatshisname...

When the smoke clears I still think that Grimes and De Sousa are in the lineup come November.
