The Kansas baseball team split a doubleheader with Jackson State Tuesday at Hoglund Ballpark.
A strong pitching performance from sophomore starting pitcher Steve Washilewski (3-2) pushed the Jayhawks to a 2-1 win in game one. After sparking a rally in the eighth inning to trim their deficit to one, Kansas (27-22) fell short of Jackson State (30-22) by an 8-7 margin in the second game of a doubleheader.
Washilewski tossed a career-high 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and allowing one earned run off of four hits. Redshirt-junior Blake Goldsberry shutout the Tigers in 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn his third save of the season.
Redshirt-freshman first baseman Dylan Ditzenberger and junior second baseman James Cosentino drove in the Jayhawks’ only two runs, with both coming in the second inning.
In the second contest, junior Benjamin Sems got the Jayhawks on the board in the first inning when he lined a two-run single up the middle. Sems led all hitters with a 3-for-5 performance that included two RBIs while Cosentino tallied two hits with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
The Jayhawks finished the season with a 6-5 record in midweek games.
Kansas travels to TCU this weekend.
