Making his Team USA debut at the Pan American Games, in Lima, Peru, former University of Kansas track standout Bryce Hoppel took fourth place in the 800 meters.
Hoppel, who announced earlier this summer he will forego his senior year at KU to run professionally, ran the 800 in 1:47.48 at the Pan Am finals on Saturday.
The Midland, Texas, native won 22 consecutive races during his final year at KU, capturing the national title in the 800 at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA championships. Later this year, Hoppel will compete at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar (Sept. 28-Oct. 6).
Elsewhere, Hoppel’s former KU teammate, Gleb Dudarev, picked up a bronze medal in the hammer throw in Sandnes, Norway, site of the European Team Championships First League.
A thrower from Belarus, Dudarev took third place on Friday, with a throw of 73.58 meters.
