Tom Keegan: KU turning into Juco U in football recruiting

Kansas head football coach David Beaty talks about his recruits during his National Signing Day press conference on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018 at the Anderson Family Football Complex.

Kansas head football coach David Beaty talks about his recruits during his National Signing Day press conference on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018 at the Anderson Family Football Complex.

Fourth-year Kansas football coach David Beaty came to Wednesday’s signing-day press conference armed with numbers. He was eager to use them to demonstrate his point that he was not putting the Kansas football program right back in the same rut that he inherited from his predecessor.

More on those numbers and notes regarding recruits from junior colleges later, but first let’s look at the inescapable reality regarding high school prospects.

In prepared statements released to the press, athletic director Sheahon Zenger and chancellor Dr. Doug Girod talked about Beaty building the football program “the right way.” I'm confused. Does that mean that recruiting and developing high school players for four or five years is the wrong way?

Beaty gave scholarships to 11 high school players a year ago and just seven this season, a number that could grow to as high as nine. That translates to 18, possibly 20, in a two-year period. Project that over a four-year period and less than half of his 85 scholarships will go to high school recruits.

Beaty bemoaned his lack of seniors on the 2017 roster, but the way he’s recruiting now, his 2020 and 2021 teams also will lack seniors unless he loads up on junior-college recruits.

The only way to break that cycle is to resist the temptation to recruit for the upcoming season at the expense of the future. That takes a lot of discipline, and so far Beaty hasn’t shown much of that in recruiting. Turner Gill was the last Kansas coach who did, but his classes encountered too many academic failures for him to keep his job longer than two years with a 5-19 record.

Beaty heads into his fourth season with a 3-33 record, which means that regardless of whether his players come to KU after high school or junior college, not enough of them are ready to play winning football against Big 12 competition.

Without ever mentioning Charlie Weis by name, Beaty talked about how he set about trying not to repeat the mistakes of his predecessor.

“We knew when we got here, based off our research from the previous three years, how did we get where we were and how did we fix it? What were the major problems?” Beaty said. “The major problem was retention and production. Retention, production, and graduation, that was a big-time problem.”

Beaty said that 13 of his 24 JC recruits prior to this year's recruiting class were academic qualifiers out of high school.

Just 2 of 36 juco recruits under Weis were academic qualifiers out of high school, according to Beaty.

“A number of those guys never participated a down,” Beaty said of Weis' juco recruits. “Fifteen of 36 never contributed on the field. Never. Fifteen of 36! Forty-two percent of those guys did not participate.”

And still somehow, Weis was able to cobble together a .214 winning percentage, which doesn’t sound like much until compared to Beaty’s .083 mark.

Weis hit it big with some jucos who handled both ends of the student-athlete designation well, such as defensive backs Cassius Sendish and Fish Smithson.

But Beaty clearly has done a better job of identifying student-athletes who can handle the academic side of things. He said all of his jucos either have graduated or are on a path to do so.

Still, Beaty hasn’t shown the confidence to go all in on recruiting and developing high school players, the slow-growth approach that Mark Mangino embraced after excessive juco recruiting at the beginning of his KU tenure backfired.

Mangino's Orange Bowl squad, always the gold standard around here, defeated Virginia Tech 24-21 to end a 12-1 season. Those Jayhawks started 23 players recruited from high schools, one (guard Chet Hartley) from a junior college.

Players who rise, fall, and pick each other up together over four or five years bond in a way that makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. It can be done, but nothing can be done without giving it a try.

John Brazelton 4 years, 6 months ago

Tom, you made this season a win or be gone season for Beaty with all your negative football articles. In 2017, lots of Beaty's starters ended up injuried before the season ended and he had no experienced back-ups. This season he will have enough 2-deep depth to complete the season. Whether the wins or losses improve in 2018 depends primarily upon whether the current roster of players are tired of losing. Coaches can plan and practice, but players win games on the field just like on the basketball court.

Dale Rogers 4 years, 6 months ago

Agree. I have no idea how Beaty will fare this year but it's pretty obvious from all the clamor from fans and, especially, local media, for his head, no wonder he has taken a win something this year attitude. It's win this year or be gone becuause the media and fans will pretty much force the issue and there goes his job. I doubt anyone reading this would react any differently unless they are independently wealthy or just don't care.

Brett McCabe 4 years, 6 months ago

Beaty's AD is the one who fired two coaches less than three years in. Not the fans.

Jeff Coffman 4 years, 6 months ago

Last year it was clear that it was win or go home...he won 1 game against a non-D1 school and keeps his job, in the third year of his coaching career, when he himself said that is the year when we expect to see the turn. If he wasn't playing for his job last year, what makes you think next year he is playing for his job?

Do you think Girod magically will care about football? Girod sent out a prepared press release this past week. He hasn't made one comment about KU football. He doesn't care and until Girod cares, Beaty doesn't have to do anything.

Dillon Davis 4 years, 6 months ago

False. David Beaty going 3-33 in his first three seasons made this a win or be gone season. It's year 4 now...there HAS to be improvement in the Win column. Which is why he went after all these JUCOs because he knows that and he thinks JUCO guys will be "ready to compete in the Big 12 now" and help him keep his head above water.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't. But he's getting us into the same sorry scholarship situation as the one he came into. Unless you're redshirting a bunch of these JUCOs, which he's not because he needs them to play and produce, then in 2021 there will be no 4-5 year seniors on this team except for the 7 he just signed (and that's if they all stay that long) and whatever freshman redshirted this past season.

Dillon Davis 4 years, 6 months ago

And he shouldn't be needing to bring in all these JUCO players to fill gaps if the guys he recruited 2 or 3 years ago were good enough to play! These spots should be going to upperclassmen but they apparently aren't "ready to go now". I mean it's SO obvious what he's doing and why he is in the position he's in.

Zenger has done a lot of good in his tenure here, but he is not good at hiring coaches. Football and women's basketball have been a disaster. And by the end of October everyone will surely see that and realize that we wasted this year by not getting rid of him sooner, thanks to Chancellor Girod.

Brian Wilson 4 years, 6 months ago

Maybe true about this being Beaty's last ride but....
You are WRONG about Beaty leaving us in the same situation as Weis. With all the Jucos with three years of eligibility that Beaty has recruited KU will field one of it's largest Junior classes it has had next year in a long long time. Plus, KU redshirted 11 players last year and the Sophomore Class is loaded with talent, transfers from Alabama, and others. If Beaty does fail and he is fired, the incoming coach will have twice the roster that Beaty had.

Beaty had less that 60 scholarship players and had the fill the rest of the roster with over 30 walk-ons his first season. KU had less scholarship plays than Penn State after sanctions, and many declared Penn States situation tantamoun to the death penalty. If somehow Beaty survives this next season, When next year's Junior Class becomes Seniors Beaty will be in position to recruit all HS recruits without having to fill holes.

Dillon Davis 4 years, 6 months ago

That's great, we'll have a large junior class next year and a big senior class the year after and then in 2021...? If he really did redshirt 11 guys, and we brought in 7 high schoolers this year, that leaves us with 18 would-be seniors in 2021. And that's if he doesn't redshirt any of the 7 new guys. And so of that 18, how many do you realistically think will be impact players? How many will even still be on the team by then?

And again, he is in YEAR 4. He has had time to bring in his own guys who are upperclassmen now. They should be getting the majority of the open spots primarily and not these JUCO gap-stoppers.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Lol oh John don't you think Beaty created his own problems but you will blame Tom for reporting those problems? 3-33!!! John 3-33 Tom has NOTHING to do with that. How do you explain the losses to Ohio and CMU John the season was young lots of healthy players then. So you ACTUALLY think that the players will win or lose games depending on whether they are tired of losing? JFC that's embarrassing.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

it's too bad that Tom can't give the rainbow and sunshine report every week about Kansas football to make people on this board feel better better about themselves. We've had people on this board even go as far as to say that Tom doesn't know what he's talking about or doesn't have sufficient evidence to report on what he's reporting.

People get mad at the weatherman because he tells them it's going to rain tomorrow instead of telling them it's going to be sunny and 80. Tom is just reporting the facts or what he understands or what he sees is an unbiased reporter it's too bad that the record of 3 and 33 by this coach isnt enough to make people understand that he cannot coach. Except for the Texas game this coach only beaten Rhode Island and SEMO, NO Mac teams and no power 5 teams and basically has some of the worst stats ever seen from a college football team on offense defense and special teams. But it's Tom's fault because he's not writing positive articles I mean seriously that's embarrassing. The record speaks for itself 3 and 33 and after this year it'll most likely be 3- 45 or 4-44 but somehow Tom is supposed to not report on the obvious that the man just cannot coach and it's time for him to go.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

Kev... you're the same guy who dismissed the Bill Miller coach addition a bad hire. You talked negatively (as usual)... how this guy has made teams worse everywhere he has gone (complete crap obviously). Only when Keegan came out and endorsed him.. .did you finally say maybe you were wrong. You're a doom and gloom guy no matter what the situation. I think Tom forgot to mention in his article the acquisition of 3 star LB out of Florida who Miller lured to KU... over offers from Penn State, LSU, Wisconsin and a slew of others. Do we have a lot of jucos.. yes, we do. Nowhere is it mentioned that 3-4 of our jucos have 3 years of eligibility left ... not 2. Nowhere is it mentioned that we have more 3 star and 4 star recruits in this class than any KU class in the 21st century. Nor did it mention that Rivals released updated class rankings.. and KU is 48th in the country.. ahead of Kansas State, Iowa State and Texas Tech. Weiss NEVER accomplished that. Stop the Weiss-Beaty comparisons.

Joe Norgay 4 years, 6 months ago

Mrs. Beaty.. I don't even know where to begin.

It's not the coaches fault anymore when players play poorly or play well? Beaty is absolved of all his terrible, terrible coaching decisions, coaching moves, ...well just all his coaching.. he's absolved of all that because it's really up to the players?

Eff man.. he's a BAD COACH. Just accept it. No one in the world knows why Zenger picked a position coach to try and turn around a football program in the depths of despair but that's what Zenger did. And it's been an absolute, bonafide, 100% disaster.

I honestly don't even fault Beaty for doing what he's doing. Someone gave him the chance to make $1.6 or whatever million and I'd sure as hell take the chance too. But I despise that Zenger is still working at KU because he is the cause of all these failures. He was hired to "fix" KU football and we're worse than ever and it's entirely on him. And yet.. no one seems to care at the university. It's disgraceful. Dr. Girod probably should take some of the blame for not firing Zenger after this season but since he's new, I suppose he may have possibly been hamstrung by BGL. But if he doesn't fire Zenger after our football team is winless or maybe possibly beats Nicholls St. and then faceplants the rest of the season.. by god..

sigh Only David Beaty and Sheahon Zenger could bring so much rage out of a once proud KU alum who supported football more than KU basketball. I don't care that Beaty has the politician speak in him and can whoo over people with his heart and drive because of how much he loves Lawrence and KU. He. is. a. terrible. football. coach. He should join the Alumni Association or WEF and help KU if he loves it so much because he's awful at the football thing. And Zenger, well Zenger should just get out of town. Otherwise we'll have two disgraced KUAD's walking around town (see: Lew Perkins)

Clarence Glasse 4 years, 6 months ago

I don't understand. Your comment is to addressed to Mrs. Beaty. Why?

Joe Norgay 4 years, 6 months ago

I was making a joke that John Brazelton had to be Beaty's wife from how much he was sticking up for him as no one could be that thorough a supporter unless they were related to him.

But I hit the wrong reply button.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

Joe, feel free to tune in elsewhere since you are obviously so disgusted with the KU football program. Do yourself that favor and go... well.. do us all a favor and go. Thank you for your consideration.

Bryce Landon 4 years, 6 months ago

Joe - come join me in cheering for Iowa Hawkeye football this fall.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

You clearly didn't attend KU.

The fact that you can just stop following your school shows you are just a bandwagon KU fan who grew up in the state and didn't want to root for the losing school.

Bryce Landon 4 years, 6 months ago

You're right, I didn't attend KU, and I did grow up in Kansas. And after eight years of piss-poor football, with no sign that things will ever get better, I got off the KU football bandwagon. And you know what? I'm not the least bit ashamed of myself.

So while you poor saps either grouse about what a horrible job David Beaty is doing with the Jayhawks or keep hoping for a miraculous change in KU football's fortunes, I'll be enjoying Saturdays in the fall enjoying Kirk Ferentz getting the Hawkeyes to an 8-4 record and a decent bowl game.

And when winter rolls around, I'll be watching Kansas basketball as I have done all my life.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

Congrats on bragging that because you are a bandwagon KU fan, you have no financial or emotional interest in our football program and can freely go support a better team.

You are the type of fan we don't want. I hope you enjoy the trash ass hawkeyes, I bet their fan base doesn't want you either.

[''] 4 years, 6 months ago

Beaty could not win 3 games in any D1 season if you gave him the opposition's playbook before the season started. He is a a below average D1 coach, arguably the worst in college football history. He is at best a recruiting coordinator. That is all. Turner Gill won more games (5) in TWO seasons than Beaty has won in 3 seasons (3). If Beaty coached Alabama they would win 2 games. He is woefully incompetent.

Joe Black 4 years, 6 months ago

You are awfully brave when you don't even have the guts to put your name on your ridiculous comments. He may not be a good coach but if he had the talent that Alabama has, he would win.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

This headline is fueled by Beaty roasting you up at the end of the presser.

I don’t know how hard it is for you to read but our 2020 and 2021 Senior classes are projected north of 15 scholarship players in each.

Those 15 players from what I’ve been able to see and what we knew about them coming in, should all be of D1 Big 12 caliber.

Only takes 22 quality starters to win a football game and 8 quality backups to reinforce it.

Luckily if we can get results on the field, we are projecting to bring in more talent than we ever have. You eliminate coaches being able to negative recruit us, we have potential to become unstoppable on the recruiting trail.

I’d honestly suggest you redirect your current emotions towards something better and possibly healthier Tom. You folk at are the only people who follow KUFB professionally that think we are in trouble in the future. I guess you could try to say that you know a lot but we both know you don’t. You get a majority of your breaking news from other industry leaders and it’s very apparent everyday.

You can disagree with bringing in some JUCO kids but I better never see you write about them being successful. Those kids are striving to achieve more than you have and probably ever will and that’s not something to be negatively attacking them for.

I wish you all the best, but I hope the readers here realize that the media here besides Scott & Matt about football is absolute trash and that people like John fitzgerald have created crappy asthetic websites with far better content.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Smh lm embarrassed for you Bryson l really am. If Tom wrote what you think he should write he be up there with Matt and Scott but because Tom writes articles that hurt ittle Bryson's feelwings Tom is a hack. What makes you the all knowing here? Please dont use "brah" in your reply we are adults you sound like an idiot talking like that.

Son Mac 4 years, 6 months ago

Everyone has an opinion. Nothing wrong with that. However, it's just an opinion until we play the games. We don't have a choice. For those that support the team, because that's what we do, we don't have blinders on. Forgive us for trying to make things at KU football more positive. Again, we don't have a choice, that's the only team we have.

Frederick Heckel 4 years, 6 months ago

No one is forcing you to cheer for these morons. Stop just accepting their trash and something might actually get done about it! Its people like you that are allowing this disgrace to continue!

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

Fred, you've succeeded. You have earned douche status. We're all cheering for YOU, sir...

Joe Black 4 years, 6 months ago

Kevin, are you a third grader?? You disagree with Bryson and I don't care about that at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, no one needs your baby talk. What the heck is "feelwings"?? In your attempt to make him look like a baby, you have actually made yourself look like the infant. Just state your dang case and stop the personal attacks. No place for it here or anywhere else.

Joe Norgay 4 years, 6 months ago

Bryson, go back to the Slant and get in the circle with everyone else.

You're making excuses for a guy who is 3-33 and if Texas didn't want to get their coach fired would be 2-34 w/ no wins of any quality whatsoever.

Hell Beaty is essentially 0-36 at this point.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

It's douche night on Joe's here.. Frederick.. hosted by ever-present Kevin.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Thanks,Mike l see you are also on "douche night" takes one to know one.

John Fitzgerald 4 years, 6 months ago

I’ll be curious what the excuses are if Beaty pulls another 0-12 or 1-11 season. Either way, I’m not going to doom him before he gets his chance to “earn it.” He did a good job recruiting, but that alone won’t win games. Win or pack your bags.

Barry Weiss 4 years, 6 months ago

I think he will get the boot well before the season ends. so he won't even have the chance to get to 11 or 12 losses.

Thomas Green 4 years, 6 months ago

So Beaty isn’t practicing what he preached and some are indignant about Tom Keegan having the audacity to write about it? Clearly some here don’t get the concept of a free press.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

Thomas... sorry that Beaty pulled together a 48th ranked recruiting class (See Jan 7th Rivals update) despite coming off an abysmal, disappointing season... and a 3-33 record. Instead of focusing on the jucos (several of which have 3 years of eligibility)... focus on the calibre of the class. We have never had this solid a recruiting class... averaging almost 3 stars across the board.

Gary Denning 4 years, 6 months ago

Never had this solid of a recruiting class? You haven't been around long. We had a class with Nolan Cromwell, Mike Butler, Laverne Smith and other NFL guys in the 70's. We had a class with 5* Frank Seuer, Kirwin Bell and others in about 1980. Mason had classes better than this. I don't remember much about Gottfried's classes but I'm guessing one or two of them were better than high 40's. Mangino had classes better than this. Gill had a class ranked in the 30's, iirc.

With our recent history of signing jucos who didn't produce (or even show up on the roster), I understand the fans hesitance to applaud signing so many jucos. Their thought is that there is nothing Beaty can do to win more than 1-2 games next year and that he is going to make it more difficult for his successor to win games with so many short-term players in the system. Yeah, that is a pessimistic view of things, but 7-8 years of abysmal football will do that to a person.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

Good one, Gary. They didn't have star ratings for recruits back in 1980... but excellent try. I am referring to modern day KU football... anything after 1990's or a timeframe when the internet was around and there were publications that ranked recruiting classes and rated prospects. Easy to look back and talk about Nolan Cromwell, Frank Seurer... John Riggins.. .Gale Sayers... but there weren't rating systems back then.. .and no way to retroactively rate these guys. The recruiting landscape (and the world for that matter).. .is much different in 21st century than prior.

David Reynolds 4 years, 6 months ago

Tom, I have blogged here & written you personally regarding your comments about Coach Beatty.

I am beginning to believe you have some kind of grudge against Coach Beatty.

As an example you sing the praises of Coach Snyder who built his program on juco players and victim of the week scheduling. Yet if Coach Beatty takes in about half his class with judo players that's not good.

Why not just comment on the quality of the players and how they can help the program.

Like I mentioned privately, and now publicly, you are part of Coach Beatty's problem by constantly interjecting your "attitudes & prejudices" into your comments. These recruits read these stories and social media and is part of their decision process where they are going top school.

Your constant criticism of recruiting, coaches & players is a detriment to KU making progress when a potential players decision maybe negatively influenced by something you write.

Let's wait and see how this class works out, before we start being so critical.

Joe Norgay 4 years, 6 months ago

Coach Beaty's problem is that he's a terrible football coach that doesn't know what the hell he's doing. The only thing he's good at is having a silver tongue and whipping the football faithful into a frenzy every year because they for some reason forget that he's made terrible decision after terrible decision and we have a 3-33 record because of it.

Keegan is not a detriment to football no matter what he writes. Coach Beaty is because he's historically one of the worst football coaches OF ALL TIME. Why can't you understand this?

Tom Keegan isn't paid to be a sunshine pumper for the university. He's paid to be a journalist. Hell, Lawrence may be the only place in the United States where a coach as bad as Beaty isn't getting so much heat that he's fired before the end of last year.

We don't need to see how the class works out because we know David Beaty is coach and in 3 years we've somehow gone backwards with progress and player development. Dude absolutely cannot do anything right.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

backwards in player development... that's hilarious. Have you even LOOKED at how many freshman and sophomores we STARTED last season? These are freshmen and sophomores... our entire offensive line for example... and 3/4 of our defensive backfield were freshmen and sophomores. And we have essentially 3 star recruits (high school, juco or otherwise). Criticize past performance if you want. The Charlie Weiss jucos who were inherited by Beaty were few and far between, especially when it came to actually taking the field. These recruits... are higher calibre.. and if this year is bad again and Beaty gets fired... the incoming coach has a much more substantial pool of talent to work with.. as evidenced by our 48th rated class.

Joe Black 4 years, 6 months ago

If he is paid to be a journalist, then he is overpaid. He rights an opinion column. To get the actual unbiased story, read Benton Smith and Matt Tait.

Bryce Landon 4 years, 6 months ago

What if he wronged an opinion column? Or what if he lefted one?

Frederick Heckel 4 years, 6 months ago

The people in these comments trying to defend Beaty are an absolute joke. I'm sure you're all actually being paid by Zenger's dumb ass to do it as well. We all know that KU has people on all message boards to try and pump sunshine up our backsides to try and convince us that nothing is wrong. Nothing will change until all fans start to finally voice their frustrations and make it known that 3-33 is not acceptable! Make it known that we're done with Beaty and Zenger's lies! Make it known that we finally want a change! Make it known that you actually give a f**k about KU football and won't just accept being a laughingstock because its KU anymore! SPEAK UP OR GET OUT!

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

put your pacifier back in Frederick...

Bryce Landon 4 years, 6 months ago

Better yet, shove that pacifier in Bryson Stricker's mouth.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

I think he’s just mad Beaty took away some of his media access.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

I get 10x the info 10x faster. I knew about LB from FL giving verbal commit Saturday night. This staff found out when Jon Kirby posted about it. I really don’t care what you say or Tom says tbh. But both of you don’t know how to run a football team (neither do I) and at least one of you (Tom) is pretty crappy their job.

It’s not Beaty’s fault that TK’s only success as a collegiate writer has been here so he hasn’t show seen JUCOs and transfers succeed.. but in case you forgot, our heisman winner was a transfer. 4/5 of the top QBs in our conference were transfers and guess what? It worked.

Charlie Weis failed with his JUCOs. Beaty is getting the right ones. I’ll take 3x4’s that are physically ready to play now over 4x5 HSers that aren’t ready and haven’t proven they can play against post HS talent. We need help now and we got it. There would be no hope for next season if we didn’t fix some of our issues we had this year. Do your research before you blindly follow TK’s word. He hasn’t even yet reported that we have more underclassmen than upperclassmen by 10+ if you include PWO. (A lot of PWO play huge roles in year 3-5 on ST & even on the field. (Ribordy, Schadler etc)

If you saw the film and build of these kids and were told we had 5 years to have them play 4. You’d cream over them. We got a beast class. Y’all are just upset because you falsely think we have no seniors in ‘20 & ‘21 and think they only have 2 years to play.

John Fitzgerald 4 years, 6 months ago

How do you get so much more information faster than anyone else?

Joe Norgay 4 years, 6 months ago

I'm actually upset because David Beaty is our football coach and he's historically one of the worst football coaches in the history of the sport of football. And he's still our coach. And people talk about giving him a 5th year no matter what.

He pulled one over on people like you and the administration and they're too prideful or too stupid to do what's right and fire the people responsible for this mess.

I cannot believe you're going to try and use recruits that Beaty has shown ZERO ability to coach up as a reason we're mad.

Get a grip man. Until Zenger and Beaty are gone, our football team will circle the drain. We're approaching the point in which we should seriously consider scrapping the football program, it's that big of an embarrassment.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

I don't know who is talking about giving Beaty a 5th year no matter what. I haven't seen one poster say that... not Bryson.. not me... not anyone.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

I don’t burn the bridges that I have built John.

You have your own website now and I personally hope it succeeds. But for it to make it to the next level you will develop connections to get you better and more exclusive content.

Tom & Benton personally screwed Beaty over and he had to change the media policy and called them out for it. I can’t remember exactly what they did but I think they tweeted about an injury or something big before it was supposed to be made public.

Every bit of information has a way and a when as to when it will be released. IE Miles Kendrick, IE Florida LB today.

Tom & Benton crossed Beaty and have been spiteful since he reprimanded them.

There is no doubt that Beaty deserves articles of criticism but he doesn’t deserve a non-football IQ lard & reporter. (Nobody on this site is qualified to be analyzing and saying how to run a program). saying how he should be running his program.

Just like he said today when he ROASTED TK in his closing remark. The truth about the JUCO situation has never been posted here. It hasn’t been posted here because there is an agenda the staff on this site has.

These are my last remarks about this. This article has hit an all-time low on this site imo and it is clear this site is no longer reporting on KUFB but attacking its being.

Mike Hart 4 years, 6 months ago

Thanks, Bryson. 2018 football team and coaching staff is what it is.. and it is NOT changing. So either accept it and support the team.. .or come back in 2019. I'm not saying we are going do to great things in 2018. I'm a fan and I hope for the best. If we get our asses handed to us... then we have Beaty recruits for 3 seasons on the field who can't.. or aren't getting it done. Rather than pile on and comment on the glass being half empty all the time... I'm going to watch the season... and hope for the best. If we fail, I support Beaty's dismissal. In my opinion, 2018 was the lowest of the low. This year's recruiting class tells me there is hope for the future... maybe that is 2019 and under a new head coach. Either way, I'm watching 2018 and will support the team, as we have freshmen and sophomores who started last year.. .that are now sophomores and juniors supplemented by a fairly impressive (and certainly better than expected) recruiting class. I am disappointed that on the day that we should be celebrating the signing of Florida LB Kenny Bastida, who chose KU over Penn State, LSU, and a slew of other schools.. we instead are hammering Beaty for a heavy judo-laden class, even though that overall recruiting class is solid top to bottom. Beaty gets ripped for not having a press conference.. and then when he does... he gets ripped for the content of his press conference. I realize that many here won't give Beaty any credit for anything... but the man has put a nice class together and unlike Weiss.. .is working his ass off to make this team better.

I appreciate the comment about the website. It's mainly for fun but we're hoping it does well. And a little advice man to man, if you want to continue your "don't burn any bridges" mantra, I'd try to tone down the insults and aggressive tone on your comments. Everyone can and will see them, including your friend Jon Kirby. And with someone who has so much more access and information than what most people on this site have access to, including some of the writers, I'm wondering why you even bother wasting your time on this site. Seems to be a little below you. If I'm in your position 1.) I'm not wasting my time bragging about my knowledge or access to information and 2.) I'm certainly not going to argue with people that obviously don't have my knowledge or access on a site that seems to be behind in reporting information.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

I can have all the knowledge in the world, but if I go to KU games and am apart of a fan base with false information, it will mean nothing..

I share my formed opinions and knowledge with this board in hopes that some people don't take what the media here says to be true to heart. The amount of people who are flipping out about this is asinine.

Girod and Zenger should be embarrassed with prepared statements.

Beaty needs to help us connect more. He has switched his recruiting tactics, switched many of his coaches and now he thinks he is belichek and can mumble and ignore the press.

I'm sure Beaty will appreciate the next coach dishing on him after he leaves.

Incentive laden contract and hasn't earned one incentive...earnitalready

Gary Wilson 4 years, 6 months ago

I can't believe some fools are still buying this load of crap. This is incompetence on the level of pre-Snyder K-State football. This staff couldn't coach a roster full of 5* out of a wet paper bag. This is insanity, and continues to be a national embarrassment. You enablers should be ashamed of yourselves. The death spiral continues.

[''] 4 years, 6 months ago

Mr. #EarnIt simply can't earn it. You put $100K into his contract so that he can win ONE FBS game and Mr. #EarnIt can't earn it. It's like Jenny Craig can't lose a single pound. It's a total clown show. Incompetence at historic levels. Girod has co-signed on it so I guess it will continue. KU is a national joke.

Andy Tweedy 4 years, 6 months ago

Good grief, Tom! This article might be 100% accurate, but it's the exact same article you've written about 5 times. Can you plagiarize yourself?

Jack Joiner 4 years, 6 months ago

According to one of my son's college teachers you can plagiarize yourself. They had to sign agreements that they wouldn't. Recruiting is over for 2018.. I'm ready to win and I am going to be positive about it. Win and the future will take care of itself.

If we don't win, then it will be time to move in a different direction, but for now Rock Chalk Jayhawk! Let's go shake the football world up!

Robert Brock 4 years, 6 months ago

Zenger and Beaty should be fired immediately. They are completely destroying KU football and may lead KU out of a P5 conference consideration in the near future. Meanwhile, Chancellor Girod does nothing. Says nothing.

Michael Terry 4 years, 6 months ago

Sorry, Tom. I have to agree that your column is off the mark. You must look at the quality of the class recruited, not how many juco players are on it. He needs to win some this year to keep his job, do you really think he can do that with a majority of high school recruits and walk ons. KU is in such a hole in recruiting, that I foresee at least a few more years of JC heavy classes until we can start competing more frequently for three and four star talent. That all assumes we win a few games this year and build upon that. I guess we'll see.

Armen Kurdian 4 years, 6 months ago

The one thing I have noticed that is endemic is basic football skills. The ability to block, tackle, catch, cut, and throw. Forget schemes, Air Raid, any of that, no offensive or defensive scheme will ever work if the players can't do the most basic of things. We could win 3 games with that alone, in my admittedly uneducated opinion.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

Armen, you are actually correct in a basic sense. Fundamentals being performed correctly result in less blowouts and more wins as a result. Look at KSU. Those players are not any more talented than us, (except on the line) but they minimize mistakes and that's how they keep themselves in games.

Rivals 48 Espn 68 24/7 64

How can rivals have the class ranked 48 while 24/7 and espn have it ranked in the 60s?

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

ESPN is a crap show in itself. I never take it into consideration because they have reporters who follow the big names but not much else. They fired a majority of the people who filled those rankings past the espn 300.

247 is a composite which consists of itself/rivals and ESPN. ESPN not having Pooka or Corione as top 300 players when every other listing has them as top 200 players, is what is bringing down our class on the 247sports composite.

Rivals and 247 are without a doubt the best and I'd lean towards rivals just because they have a bazillion writers and experts that follow even the smallest of recruits and help us get a better picture of how quality some people are. 247 is slow to update things because their staff is smaller.

Michael Maris 4 years, 6 months ago

247 was started by the people who originally created website. When Rivals sold out to Yahoo Sports. Bobby Burton and a host of others left Rivals and started 247 College Sports recruiting service site. A lot of the guru's left Rivals after their contracts expired. But, a lot of them stayed and executed new contracts with Rivals (such as Shay Wildeboor and Jon Kirby).

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Geez its like Jonestown and Waco on here some people just can't stop drinking the coolaid. Maybe another 1-11 season might change their minds but they are so far gone they'll cry to give Beaty an extension. Nut jobs. We should pity them.

Tony Bandle 4 years, 6 months ago

It's a shame that the passion shown for KU football, good or bad, as shown in all the posts listed above is not rewarded with at least a minimal amount of passion from the administration, the coaching staff and the players.

I always cheer for KU Football at the start of the seems I always end up cheering for it to be over as soon as possible in order to get to the sport with some relevance.

Since the Mag's removal, cheering for Kansas Football is like Dante's last level of Hell.

"Mangino's Orange Bowl squad, always the gold standard around here, defeated Virginia Tech 24-21 to end a 12-1 season. Those Jayhawks started 23 players recruited from high schools, one (guard Chet Hartley) from a junior college."

Tom you won't tell us about the recruiting classes that got us there that will filled with JUCOs now will you?

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

I just checked the 24/7 site 03 class 12 jucos 25 in recruiting class 04 class 2 jucos 21 in recruiting class 05 class 7 jucos 27 in recruiting class 06 class 4 jucos 23 in recruiting class 07 class 2 jucos 22 in recruiting class 27 jucos over 5 classes 118 recruits in total 4.3% of total of all 03-07 none of of the 03 jucos would have been around in 07.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

Doesn't matter if they were around, Mangino wouldn't have been around if 27 JUCOs didn't come in. that is 27 JUCO's to Beaty's 35ish now total? Mangino didn't inherit as bad of a situation as Beaty and that makes up for the little difference. The point is it takes winning to get the best HS talent and JUCOs can give you that ability.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

See when the narrative doesn't go your way and you can't blame or skewer Tom you just say it doesn't matter and find ways to defend your argument. Oh Mangino didnt have as bad of a situation. You always have to be right on here or the loudest mouth full of pompus excuses. Toms a jerk you dont like him so you bash or criticize everything he does. I provided proof and still you cant except the truth. Thats 27 jucos over 5 recruiting classes Beaty has 35 over 4 classes and only 1 year under Mangino was it 50/50 jucos to high schoolers. Find proof Bryson name aome some of those Jucos that made a difference because l know Talib and Chris Harris did. Thats 2 high schoolers who are now in the NFL.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Kerry Meier, Darrell Stucky 2 more nflers, best qb KU ever had Todd Reesing all high schoolers Dezmon Briscoe nfl high school

The recruiting is over, now the coaching and practicing start. Let's let the players and coaches play the 2018 season and see what the results are.

Bill Kackley 4 years, 6 months ago

The author of this teport should be fired.

Lloyd Kinnison 4 years, 6 months ago

Many comments and no solutions to helping KU football. Our coach was selected because he could recruit in Texas . Where is the documentation of recruiting or success. These are his players, Our AD has backed him every year. This year more wins than losses.....first AD is removed and then coach. New contract for AD and Coach..".win or leave and NOT in 5 years.

Barry Weiss 4 years, 6 months ago

so the real question for me is how long Beaty will even be coach next year. Probably will be lucky to win one of those 3 OOC games. Then conference play, those should all be losses so how many will it take to pull the trigger on a new coach to come and are do some REAL recruiting for 2019 and some REAL coaching?

Dirk Medema 4 years, 6 months ago

If you want the intelligent version, go over to the Topeka paper. Not sure if someone spoke to Beaty about the ignorant rants over the past few months, but apparently Coach spoke directly to the ignorance of how the recruiting has been completely different from the past regime. Not that you'd hear it here. It doesn't fit the negative mantra, ignorant as it is.

Joseph Bullock 4 years, 6 months ago

I expect better results from our football team, and fully believe that will happen this upcoming season. We did have a lot of injuries last season, and I believe we willl finally have our full allotment of Scholarships this season. We all have our opinions, but if you are writing articles, make sure you are not trying to undermine the coach! You obviously didn’t get your way-get over it, move on, and write something Positive, for a change!

Randy Bombardier 4 years, 6 months ago

I don't have much time for this anymore. Its also pretty pointless yet i will add my 2 cents worth. I think it would be best to go with four and five year guys and make our offers late not early. Get guys off the radar but who have the right build and attitude. Then, develop them.

It certainly does appear as though panic is setting in. I hate to see that. I'm guessing that this is Betty's last year. I hope we see a different team this year and we are all surprised.
