Kansas junior runner Sharon Lokedi placed second at the Midwest Regional at Iowa State on Friday, qualifying for the NCAA cross country championships next week.

Lokedi, who took fifth in the nation last year, crossed the finish line in 20:11.6. KU women’s cross country team placed 10th and the men were 18th.

“I’m really excited for Sharon,” head coach Stanley Redwine said. “She’s put in the work and the results have paid off. She’s just phenomenal, she’s just a hard worker and she’s looking forward to the NCAAs.”

KU junior Alaina Schroeder followed Lokedi in 18th place, running a season-best time of 20:38.9. She hopes to earn an at-large individual selection to the NCAA championships, which will be announced Monday.

Michael Melgares led the KU men’s team in 52nd place, finishing the 10K in 30:11.1.
