The Kansas volleyball program maintained its No. 4 national ranking and senior libero Cassie Wait earned Big 12 defensive player of the week honors.
In short, more of the same for the KU volleyball program, which swept three matches last week to improve to 9-0, marking the fourth time in school history that the Jayhawks have opened a season with nine consecutive victories.
Wait won the honor for the second week in a row after posting one 30-dig and two 20-dig performances. She now has recorded at least 20 digs in five straight matches. Her 33 digs in a victory over Creighton at the Bluejay Invitational set a tournament record.
Wait leads the Big 12 in digs per set (5.65) and leads a KU defense which is holding opponents to a Big 12-best .096 hitting percentage.
“Our defense has kept us in matches in many ways so far this season and she is the captain of what we are doing defensively,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “Our defense behind the block has certainly taken a step up and Cassie is largely responsible for that.
“Cassie always plays at a high level with great effort. It’s unconditional for her.”
Kansas will look to keep its unbeaten season alive on the road Friday against Xavier and No. 14 Purdue.
