Chapel Hill, N.C. ? The Kansas women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end on Friday night with a with a 2-0 road loss to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Jayhawks ended their season with an 11-6-4 record.
Junior Lois Heuchan and freshman Katie McClure both had a shot on goal in the first five minutes for the Jayhawks, but both were saved by Tar Heels goalie Lindsey Harris.
The Jayhawks were outshot by the Tar Heels 12-0 in the second half, and 19-5 for the game, but they were able to stay within striking distance for 80 minutes. With just more than 10 minutes to play, Kansas was forced to ramp up the pressure on defense and surrendered the goal of the match.
“I’m disappointed for the kids because I thought they competed really hard tonight,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “It was a game of two halves. We definitely had the better of the game in the first half but didn’t capitalize on some really good chances. And they really had the better of it in the second half. I’m really proud of this team. It’s a special group of kids and it’s been a real pleasure to be able to coach them this season.”
The 2016 campaign marks the seventh time in the last nine years that Kansas has won 10 games or more.
