Bill Self: Jayhawks’ win over TCU ‘a dud game’

Kansas University’s basketball team, which scored over 100 points in its first two Big 12 Conference games (102-74 vs. Baylor and 109-106, 3OTs vs. Oklahoma), has fizzed a bit in the last three contests.

The (15-2, 4-1) Jayhawks, who topped TCU, 70-63, on Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse, lost to West Virginia, 74-63, on Tuesday in Morgantown, after upending Texas Tech, 69-59, on Jan. 9 in Lubbock.

“It was a dud game,” KU coach Bill Self said of Saturday’s victory, in which the Jayhawks went 5-of-20 from three and hit 43.3 percent from the field overall.

TCU hit 36.9 percent of its floor shots.

“We didn’t do a lot of great things to create a lot of energy, not from a lack of trying,” KU’s coach said. “We’re going through a phase right now we’re kind of duds.”

Self addressed the issue further.

“We’re up 19 with three minutes left (4:36), just putter around and end up letting them slice that to seven, which was absolutely ridiculous,” Self said.

“It was one of those matter of fact deals: ‘Let’s win and get the heck out of here.’ The last two outings have been very lackluster. Certainly we’ve got to be a lot better this week (Tuesday at Oklahoma State; Saturday at home vs. Texas).”

That was definitely not an inspiring game. And it definitely gives me cause for concern as we go to Stillwater - a place where we consistently have trouble winning.

Would definitely not have faired well against a quality team in any arena with the effort given. In a lot of ways, it looked like WVU again, but fortunately against a lesser opponent this time. Not sure that same effort will produce favorable result in Stillwater or against UT.

We did a good job, most of the game, stopping dribble penetration. Good defensive effort.

Cheick was clearing cobwebs from the ceiling and grabbing boards while not making silly fouls. I think 4 of his 5 swats went back to TCU though. I don't know if he will be able to be like Withey and block and gain possession because he does it on pure athleticism and not anticipation. He gets a kick out of the swat and the Mutombo finger wagging was the same as the dunk hand behind the head flashy move. It wasn't spontaneous but contrived. Okay if you are in an option year on your contract. Other than that it just looked very outdated and weak.

Bragg wasn't as timid and is getting to be all around good.

Bill said this game is supposed to be fun. Do Seldom and Funk look like they are having fun? Perry gets aggressive and then it's, nah. I don't know if they don't care or not but it doesn't look like it. They need to free themselves from whatever is going on. I hope to see them find a vision and make it enjoyable.

Does our gang of four have a mission in mind? What goes on in the locker room and practice. Are Wayne, Frank or Perry vocal and upbeat or whatever? Something seems to be missing.

Did it end with the OU game? We prevailed in a 1 vs 1 match up so what else can top that? OU hasn't been the same either. They squeaked past OSU and were lucky by outscoring WVU by 14 at the line. Shooting 35% and 29% from three at home and getting all the calls. Is that sort of hangover still possible three games later? Let's take a few days off has become let's take a few games off?

A four way 4-1 tie at the top of the conference.

If we show like this at home against UK we will be crying for sure.

Tell me, guys and dolls, what is happening?

Teams have been playing down to weaker competition since sport began.

Allin Herring 6 years, 5 months ago

Yes 3 very lackluster games in a row. Sure hope this does not become a habit. We finally play some better teams than Holy Cross or Loyola and we have zero effort and poor defense. We keep this kind of play up you can kiss the Big 12 season good bye. We really made thing tough by losing to West Virginia. If we play like we did today against UK they will beat us by 20.

Didn't notice that Kentucky lost to 7-8 Auburn?

Kent Richardson 6 years, 5 months ago

UK was trying, without success, to infuse Skal Labissiere with some BB smarts and struggling along and then Tyler Ulis, mr. 28%, started nailing 3's against Louisville. They looked good for 3 or 4 games and then Auburn? I guess if we are not ready for them then who will we be ready for?

Allin Herring 6 years, 5 months ago

Good thing we were not playing Auburn Saturday. But then we probably would not had a 19 point lead that we blew inside of 3 minutes at the end of the game against such a power house like TCU

Kent Richardson 6 years, 5 months ago

Can we turn it on at will? Maybe, this year in BB is pretty weird.

Len Shaffer 6 years, 5 months ago

At the risk of quoting Jay, "the sky is falling! the sky is falling!"

There are tough periods like this every year, and every year KU comes through it just fine. Things are a little rough at the moment but I'm confident that KU will get through it and be okay.

The last few years we seem to have these few games a year in a row where we look uninterested and play these dud games as coach said, maybe a little fatigue? I don't know. Maybe the OU game was too much too soon but hopefully we come out more energized or we will lose in Stillwater and that will be very damaging for the conference race. Come on boys lets get out of this funk.
