Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s race in sports symposium at Kansas University.
“The Power of Sport: A Conversation on Business, Race and Sports” is planned for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Kansas Union Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required through eventbrite.com.
The evening will begin with Shawn Alexander, associate professor of African and African-American studies and Langston Hughes Center director, leading a panel discussion with former KU athletes including Wayne Simien, Lisa Braddy and Ernie Shelby.
Following his talk on race, sports and society, Zirin will greet attendees and sign books, which will be available for purchase at the event.
Zirin is the author of eight books about the politics of sports, including “The John Carlos Story,” which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Zirin hosts XM Satellite Radio’s “Edge of Sports Radio” and is a columnist for SLAM Magazine and The Progressive.
