Manhattan ? Kansas University upended Kansas State, 4-2, in the tennis Sunflower Showdown on Saturday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium, the Jayhawks’ first win in Manhattan since 2008.
KU improved to 15-5 overall, 5-2 in the Big 12. It’s the first time since 2008 KU has won five conference matches.
“I thought we faced adversity well today,” Kansas coach Todd Chapman said. “In some positions we created our own adversity, and in some spots Kansas State put us in uncomfortable positions. There is always a little extra tension and nerves when you’re playing on the road against your in-state rival.”
KU’s Nina Khmelnitckaia and Janet Koch won at No. 1 doubles, and Smith Hinton-Anastasiya Rychagova won at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Rychagova (No. 1), Koch (No. 3) and Maria Jose Cardona (No. 5) earned two-set singles victories to win the match.
KU was forced to forfeit at No. 6 singles because of an illness to Summer Collins.
Kansas will conclude the regular season with matches at Jayhawk Tennis Center against Oklahoma on Friday and Oklahoma State on Sunday.
