Recruiting notebook: Self looking for ‘everything’

Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self said “everything,” when asked what he’s looking for in recruiting. “You never know who is going to leave. If we could get a great guard, a lead guard, great. If we could get a great wing or great 2-guard, great, but our emphasis has to be bigs. We need to sign two to three bigs at least losing for sure Perry (Ellis), Jamari (Traylor) and Hunter (Mickelson) and whoever else could leave. It opens three to four spots inside. It’s nice to have Dwight. We know he’ll be eligible next year. I am hoping we can get two good bigs.”

More on recruiting: Marques Bolden, a 6-10 senior from DeSoto (Texas) High, on Monday narrowed his list of schools to KU, Alabama, Kentucky, Duke, Baylor, Oklahoma, TCU and Wake Forest. He will visit Kentucky on Wednesday. ... KU has offered a scholarship to Romello White, a 6-8 senior forward from Peachtree Ridge High in Suwanee, Georgia, according to Jayhawkslant.com. He’s ranked No. 116 in the Class of 2016. He’s also considering Alabama, Auburn, Marquette, SMU, Tennessee and others.

Self is looking for 'everything'. Coach K just got his second 5 star commitment for 2016.

I'll never understand why people compare recruiting classes before they are finished. Comparing them this early is particularly ridiculous since most of the top recruits have already said they will wait until the end of the signing period to commit.

Recruiting is a difficult concept for some folks, Shannon.

I'll never understand why people think no one can comment on why KU which is: a destination school for recruits, in the best city in the world, with more to offer than any recruit would ever dream of, struggles to get a single high recruit early in the recruiting process while other schools do not.

It is well, particularly ridiculous Shannon

I never said people couldn't comment. They can comment/provide their opinion, just as I can. You should work on your ability to read/comprehend the English language.

You must have forgot that Selden signed early and last year Bragg signed relatively early. When kids sign super early (like in the summer) I assume some "shady business" is going on, or the kids already had their mind made up well before and no amount of recruitment was going to change their mind. An example would be the kid(s) signing early with Alabama after being on the billionaire Troutt's AAU team. Troutt's connection with Avery Johnson makes it quite suspicious. If KU isn't doing this shady business, they have to wait until the recruits actually visit, and it's known who is leaving before we can to get them to commit.

Good grief. We've covered this ad nauseum. I for one do not care when in the year a recruit commits to Kansas, so long as we have a good team with good pieces coming in behind them. And by all accounts, we have that right now.

Speaking only for myself, I don't care if you comment on that subject. I just think you are too pessimistic about it, and actually just wrong. Quick list of players that committed to Kansas during the early signing period (Or before!)

Perry Ellis Brannan Greene Conner Frankamp Wayne Selden Joel Embiid Kelly Oubre Cliff Alexander

That is a ton of high end recruits. I think you got all bent out of shape with worry about last years class, and that has clouded your memory. (That class, turned out just fine BTW)

*Committed during the early period during their Jr year in HS

So far we have offered to Mitch Lightfoot #140 and now Romello White #116. We need to do better than that.

Michael Bennett 6 years, 8 months ago

Um...almost every blue chip recruit has also received a scholarship offer from KU as well. Those two are just the random lower-ranked guys we've offered.

Marius Rowlanski 6 years, 8 months ago

Random? Hardly. Bill Self and Norm Roberts do not randomly recruit anyone. Nor do they randomly schedule visits..Lightfoot will visit 9/18/15.

Is it just a random that both players are forwards?
