First-year Kansas University head football coach David Beaty hasn’t revealed a depth chart, even to his players, but one appears to be falling into place.
One guess at what it could look like when the season starts two weeks from today in Memorial Stadium, 11 a.m. kickoff vs. South Dakota State:
Offense
Quarterback: 1. Montell Cozart, 6-2, 193, Jr.; 2. Deondre Ford, 6-1, 200, Jr.
Comment: One or both of KU’s true freshmen — Carter Stanley and Ryan Willis — face the possibility of preserving a year of eligibility by red-shirting this season. That, however, presumes that an upperclassman will perform capably. Passing accuracy remains the most crucial question mark heading into the season.
Running back: 1. Ke’aun Kinner, 5-9, 180, Jr.; 2. De’Andre Mann, 5-9, 205, Sr..
Comment: Kinner’s size and Mann’s concussion history make a job-share the way to go here. Both backs have plenty of talent and drive.
Wide receiver: 1. Josh Stanford, 6-1, 200, Jr.; 2. Quincy Perdue, 6-3, 210, So.
Comment: Stanford had issues that kept him off the field at times at Virginia Tech, but a lack of talent never was one of them. Beaty has praised the leadership he has shown with younger players.
Wide receiver: 1. Tre’ Parmalee, 5-10, 171, Sr.; 2. Derrick Neal, 5-10, 170, So.
Comment: Parmalee carries out assignments well, but Neal is more explosive.
Wide receiver: 1. Steven Sims, 5-10, 170, Fr.; 2. Shakiem Barbel, 6-3, 192, Sr.
Comment: Beaty has tried not to talk up Sims because he’s a freshman, but it hasn’t been easy for the coach.
Tight end: 1. Ben Johnson, 6-5, 234, So.; 2. Kent Taylor, 6-5, 220, Jr.
Comment: Taylor also will spend time lining up on the outside, sharing the field with Johnson.
Left tackle: 1. Jordan Shelley-Smith, 6-5, 296, Jr.; 2. Clyde McCauley, 6-5, 275, Fr.
Comment: The lack of depth here makes it imperative for the first-string tackles to remain healthy to give time for younger players to build their bodies before being charged with protecting the quarterback’s health.
Left guard: 1. Bryan Peters, 6-3, 298, Sr.; 2. Jacob Bragg, 6-4, 284, Fr.
Comment: Peters has worked hard to shore up his weight-room shortcomings and finally, in his fifth year, has the opportunity to show what he has learned.
Center: 1. Keyon Haughton, 6-2, 290, Sr.; 2. Joe Gibson, 6-3, 293, So.
Comment: This was how the depth chart looked at the beginning of last season, but midway through the fifth game, Gibson took over for Haughton.
Right guard: 1. D’Andre Banks, 6-3, 309, Jr.; 2. Will Smith, 6-3, 327, Jr.
Comment: Banks had a good spring and summer in the weight room, running and learning how to improve his technique. He has moved to the front with work ethic, attitude and brain power.
Right tackle: Larry Mazyck, 6-8, 343, Sr.; 2. Jayson Rhodes, 6-4, 300, So.
Comment: Mazyck worked hard over the summer at shaping his body, and now we’ll see if he has kicked the false-start habit that marred his first season with Kansas.
Kicker: 1. Matthew Wyman, 6-1, 218, Jr; 2. Nick Bartolotta, 5-6, 190, So.
Comment: Wyman will handle kickoffs and long field goals. Bartolotta should handle extra points and is in the running to be used for short field goals.
Defense
Defensive end: 1. Damani Mosby, 6-3, 239, Jr.; 2. Anthony Olobia, 6-5, 239, Jr.
Comment: Mosby, so quick off the edge, has been the biggest star of training camp. Olobia also gets off the line of scrimmage quickly. So does true freshman Dorrance Armstrong, who could make it onto the field on passing downs here and there.
Defensive end: 1. Ben Goodman, 6-3, 253, Sr.; 2. T.J. Semke, 6-2, 248, Sr.
Comment: Both veterans bring it on every snap in practice to set the effort standard.
Defensive tackle: 1. Kapil Fletcher, 6-3, 271, Sr.; 2. Corey King, 6-1, 295, Sr.
Comment: Once he squares into top shape, King, University of Miami graduate transfer, could use his strength to make a difference in the too-small middle of the defense.
Defensive tackle: 1. Daniel Wise, 6-3, 271, Fr.; 2. Tyler Holmes, 6-3, 273, Jr.
Comment: Wise has been the best of an undersized lot of D-tackles throughout camp.
Linebacker: 1. Marcquis Roberts, 6-1, 220, Jr.; 2. Schyler Miles, 6-2, 221, Jr.
Comment: Roberts, a transfer from South Carolina, has the most experience and talent among KU linebackers.
Linebacker: 1. Courtney Arnick; 2. Kyron Watson.
Comment: Arnick brings mobility and smarts, but he must finish tackles better than in previous seasons.
Nickelback: 1. Tevin Shaw, 5-11, 194, Jr.; 2. Greg Allen, 5-11, 212, Jr.
Comment: A returning starter, Shaw is known as one of the toughest players on the team.
Cornerback: 1. Brandon Stewart, 6-0, 171, Jr.; 2. Ronnie Davis, 6-0, 192, Sr.
Comment: It might take him time to refine his technique and adjust to the better competition, but Stewart projects as the team’s best corner.
Cornerback: 1. Tyrone Miller, 6-0, 180, Fr.; 2. Matthew Boateng, 5-11, 176, So.
Comment: It didn’t take long for the coaching staff to become high on Miller, and nothing he has done since has changed anybody’s mind.
Strong safety: 1. Fish Smithson, 5-11, 193; 2. Michael Glatczak, 5-10, 173, Sr.
Comment: Smithson has a nose for the ball and picked up valuable experience last season.
Free safety: 1. Bazie Bates, 6-1, 186, Jr.; 2. Allen.
Comment: Bates is one of the squad’s loudest talents, a hard-hitter with the speed and agility to stay with talented wide receivers.
Punter: 1. Eric Kahn, 6-5, 204, Sr.; 2. Ruben Guzman, 5-8, 190, Sr.
Comment: Kahn needs to perfect a quicker release, or Guzman, a lefty who hangs them really, really high, could move ahead of him.
