Kansas University sophomore guard Wayne Selden Jr. said he learned of Conner Frankamp’s decision to leave Kansas University’s basketball program on Friday morning.
“I found out probably about 10 minutes before everybody else. It came as a shock to me as well,” Selden said Friday afternoon.
He said “no,” when asked if he was aware Frankamp, whose locker is next to Selden’s in the Jayhawk locker room, was thinking about leaving.
“He’s just a great person, great player to be around,” Selden said. “He became one of my best friends. It’s the business we’re in. This is what it is. It’s hard when you don’t see it coming. It’s hard to really grasp it, not having him there, not having him in the locker room. Not having him around … it’s going to hurt.”
As far as impact on the team, Selden said: “I’ll probably have to play more point here and there. We’ve got two great point guards here as well. I’m pretty good with that.
“It goes from seven great guards to six great guards. A lot of competition is still there. I don’t think the competition is going to dwindle. I feel it might even pick up more now.”
Junior Perry Ellis, who like Frankamp is from Wichita, said he was not aware Frankamp had been thinking of leaving.
“I didn’t actually see it coming,” Ellis said. “He was doing real well. He only knows what’s best for himself. Only yourself knows what you want to do and need to do. We’re all behind him. We’re all going to support him. He’s a great guy, always about the team first, just a great guy, overall guy.”
