Game balls and gassers: KU vs. TCU

By J-W Staff Report     Oct 9, 2016

Game Balls

Sophomore wide receiver Steven Sims delivered his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, finishing with 101 yards on nine receptions.

Shakiem Barbel was a pass-catching machine early and often. The senior wideout finished the game with 94 yards on nine receptions and helped new starting quarterback Ryan Willis get into a rhythm early.

Gassers

On one drive early in the first half, wideout LaQuvionte Gonzalez twice showed why KU’s horizontal passing game struggles so much when he missed blocks and allowed TCU to blow up the play and force the KU receivers to stretch their path to the sideline.

A holding penalty by KU lineman D’Andre Banks negated a long touchdown pass from Ryan Willis to Taylor Martin early in the third quarter.

Box score

Game Balls

Jimmay Mundine turned plenty of short catches into huge plays. He finished with 137 yards and a touchdown on seven catches, the most yards by a KU tight end since at least 1974.

Tedarian Johnson had a sack for a loss of 17 yards, and recovered a fumble at the 10-yard line with good footwork near the sideline. He also made four solo tackles, leading KU’s defensive line.

Gassers

KU’s secondary failed to make a stop on a third-and-20 from TCU’s own 10-yard line midway through the third quarter. The Horned Frogs turned that first down into seven points just five plays later.
