KU track picks up 17 event victories

? Kansas University’s track-and-field team tuned up for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships by picking up 17 event victories on Saturday at the Ward Haylett Invitational.

Diamond Dixon paced the Kansas women with a pair of victories. Dixon won the 200 in 23.44 seconds and the 400 in a meet-record 52.45 seconds.

On the women’s side, KU’s other winners were: Tianna Valentine, 100 meters, 11.72 seconds; Whitney Adams, 800, 2:07.84; Natalie Becker, 1,500, 4:26.26; Jaimie House, pole vault, 3.8 meters (12 feet, 51/2 inches); Sydney Conley, long jump 6.04 (19-93/4); Anastasiya Muchkayev, shot put, 12.12 (39-91/4); and Jessica Maroszek, discus, 56.01 (183-9).

Kansas’ men’s winners were: Shawn Smith, 100, 10.65; DeMario Johnson, 200, 20.96; Reid Buchanan, 1,500, 3:47.7; James Wilson, 5,000, 14:39.63; Michael Stigler, 110 hurdles, 14.0; Caleb Cowling, long jump, 7.14 (23-53/4); Richard Smith, triple jump, 15.03 (49-33/4); and Mitchell Cooper, discus, 53.36 (175-1).

After a week off, the Jayhawks will travel May 16-18 to the Big 12 Outdoor in Lubbock, Texas.
