Wiggins to hold 2 p.m. news conference on Monday to announce NBA plans

Kansas University freshman basketball guard Andrew Wiggins will hold a news conference at 2 p.m., Monday in Allen Fieldhouse, in which he’s expected to announce his intentions to enter the 2014 NBA Draft.

KU freshman center Joel Embiid, who like Wiggins is expected to be taken in the top three of the 2014 Draft, will not be part of this news conference.

Wiggins has long acknowledged he’s a one-and-done college player. Sources indicate there has been no change in his stance entering the news conference.

The Wiggins news conference is closed to the public.

Not surprising. Though I think the longer it takes Embiid to make his decision, the more likely it is he stays. I was starting to wonder - due to the fact that Wiggins had remained mum after the Stanford loss - if the two of them were going to declare together. Apparently not!

Why would Embiid take so long to simply decide to stay? I thought the same thing about Embiid, but was expecting an announcement shortly after Selden's tweet that he was staying. But, the longer he takes, the more I'm convinced that he's working out agent or representation details before he makes an announcement of leaving. I think if Embiid goes, he'll use Luc Mbah aMoute's agent.

I really thought Embiid would stay based on some of his comments throughout the year. But, the year came to an abrupt stop and don't think he thought it would end on the bench, in the ncaas. But, there's always a chance that he'll stay untill he announces. Wiggins should tell Bill Self and go. Why the pony and cart show? Unless he's staying? But those sources are always right because they're "close to the situation." Like they all jumped the gun with Embiid only to have him deny making a decision at all. Actually, it won't be a big surprise either way for both players. Maybe a tad bit if Wiggins stayed... which is highly unlikely.

Remember, if you declare for the draft, you have to withdraw that commitment by April 15 per NCAA rules. But if you simply say nothing, the NBA requires you to declare by April 27. Weird.

But a kid has more time if he is just silent.

another beautiful example of the wonderful relationship between the NCAA and the NBA.

Good luck in the league Andrew! Gonna miss that 2nd jump tap in, all the smiles, and the genuineness. Will see you plenty on sportscenter top 10 I'm sure and hopefully lots of all star games. Will never forget the day AW committed. Good luck young fella!! Rock Chalk!

Thanks Andrew for the season, not sure why a press conference this should just be a release, no drama with this announcement, no real questions will be asked...?

Totally unrelated --- KY in the final four is kind of hard to stomach right now. I do not think we could have beat FL but damn.

Good luck to wiggins and the future. I love the way Wiggins played toward the end of the year. He was a special player that all KU fans had the pleasure to watch. I am so glad he chose us and we had that chance. He will be an all-star and we will see alot of him in the future.

I am just wondering if anyone has seen or heard about the picture of Tharpe......

Brandon Mahon 8 years, 8 months ago

just go on twitter and type Tharpe... I dont know where it came from but it is all over

John Fitzgerald 8 years, 8 months ago

Well ... We know where his head has been at. Can't he mad though. It's part of the life. Some give in and others rise above it. Obviously he gave in.

Ryan Michael 8 years, 8 months ago

Wow... What a moron. Party, have fun, do your thing... But to take a selfie of it and then obviously send it to someone else or post it online (intentionally or not).

This may be Tharpe's final turnover... Turning over his job.

Joe Baker 8 years, 8 months ago

Don't think it's Tharpe. The tats don't match. It looks like him, but the tats don't match on the arm.

Sam Constance 8 years, 8 months ago

No, that's definitely him. Here's an in-game picture where you can see the stars on his shoulder and the "My Hero" text running down the inside of his upper arm:

Dale Kroening 8 years, 8 months ago

I hate assuming anything , BUT Tharpe looks trashed in the picture. Be interesting to see what punishment he'll get. Not good for Naa either way.....

Rodney Crain 8 years, 8 months ago

Tharpe picture -- He can't stop making bad decisions. This guy is the leader of our team? Really?

Suzi Marshall 8 years, 8 months ago

It appears Tharpe has no plans to marry the woman who is the mother of his child.

What a contrast between players on a team when you contrast the qualities of a guys like Black to Tharpe.

I hope to log into KUSports to find an article, before next season commences, that Tharpe is no longer with the program.

I'm gonna miss Wiggins. Even in games where he didn't have his best game, there was always the real possibility that he was going to do something you wouldn't forget. His dunk against EKU when Mason looked like he'd lobbed it to the concessions guy in the upper deck was awesome!!! I'd rank that right up there with Raef's vicious dunk against Misery and the dunk where Milt Newton got called for a charge when he went spread eagle over the Notre Dame power forward!!!

Reggie Flenory 8 years, 8 months ago

Wiggins is holdin press conf to tell us something we all already know oh well we still love you lil homie you played hard worked hard and i am so glad you came to kansas you and ya brother in wichita brought some rock star excitement to the state i still feel like you and embiid can use another yr of refinement especially when it comes to your ball handling and ball security in the lane (not to mention playing through contact) but im sure those are issues that will be addressed in the nba love seeing you in the crimson, blue and white ROCKCHALK!!!!!!

Jonathan Allison 8 years, 8 months ago

Of course Wiggins will hold a press conference to announce that he plans to enter the draft. Bill Self wants every early draft entrant to hold a press conference. The intention is that the media shows up and it gets played all over ESPN, etc... and HS players see Wiggins talk about how much he loved playing at KU and how much he feels like he learned playing for Bill Self and how he feels like being a Jayhawk has prepared him for the NBA. It's public relations 101. If he just issued a press release then KU fans would be the only people to read it.

Unless... Mr. Joel "WHAT IF????" Embiid has convinced him to return in pursuit of an NCAA national championship. We can always dream!

Joe Baker 8 years, 8 months ago

Guess we now know what was in his head during games.

Joe Baker 8 years, 8 months ago

I don't think this is Tharpe. The pic is removed for obvious reasons, but his tats don't match. It looks like Tharpe, but don't think it's him.

Eric TheCapn 8 years, 8 months ago

The tattoos absolutely do match. Note the star on the right shoulder here.

Sam Constance 8 years, 8 months ago

And the "My Hero" text running down the inside of the arm. It's him.

Curious to see how Self will handle this. I'm not one to call for a guy to get booted from the team for engaging in something that any adult should be able to choose to do, so I'm not going to.

But, posting that pic, and doing it with this kind of timing (one week after your team exits the NCAA tournament two rounds too early) demonstrates incredibly poor judgement. Sort of a "not in trouble for doing X, but because being so stupid about X shows that you have some serious responsibility issues" kind of situation.

Jonathan Allison 8 years, 8 months ago

Congratulations to Andrew Wiggins! I am so glad that he chose to be a Jayhawk. Thanks for being a part of KU's 10th consecutive conference title.

I didn't intend to interject Naadir's behavior into an article about Wiggins, but I'll offer my take and then no further comments.

The damage that Tharpe has done for this girl cannot be undone. She's going to lose her job (some report she's a school nurse), and this will likely follow her in her job search. I have no idea what her personal situation is like, so I don't know what kind of personal damage this could do to her, but she will not have much of an opportunity to erase this from her record. She could possibly pursue legal action against whomever posted the picture publicly.

Tharpe will likely be disciplined privately by Bill Self, and maybe serve a suspension to start the season. He will be questioned publicly about "his mistakes" and unwise "use of social media" but even though he victimized that girl by taking the photo, he'll have a whole year to tell the world and hopefully show the world that he's learned from it and matured and grown.

For Naadir Tharpe, all he has to do is stay out of trouble for one year and this problem will pretty much go away for him, but not for her. That's what's sad about it. The more press it gets the worse it gets for the girl, but Tharpe's the one holding the camera.

It's very disappointing for Tharpe. Despite all of his shortcomings he's been here for three years and other than playing an unsanctioned summer league game, he's stayed out of trouble off the court. Hopefully he learns some real life lessons, after all, the man has a baby girl of his own and I'm sure he can imagine how bad he'd want to hurt the guy one day who did something like this to his baby girl.

End of submission.
