KU women roll against Incarnate Word

By Benton Smith     Dec 4, 2014

Confronting little resistance from its overmatched opponent Thursday night at Allen Fieldhouse, Kansas University’s women’s basketball team easily bounced back from its second loss of the season to beat Incarnate Word, 68-46.

Coach Bonnie Henrickson only had to play star forward Chelsea Gardner 21 minutes, and the senior still put up 17 points and four rebounds, with three blocked shots.

Likewise, senior guard Natalie Knight played relatively sparingly, logging 22 minutes while scoring 11 points and dishing six assists against the Cardinals (2-5).

The Jayhawks made 26 of their 46 shot attempts (56.5 percent), including an 8-for-12 showing from behind the three-point line. Senior guard Asia Boyd went 3-for-5 from deep on her way to a 13-point outing off the bench. Knight converted three of four from long range. Freshman guard Lauren Aldridge (five points) hit her only three-point try and fellow first-year starter Chayla Cheadle (10 points) made one of her two attempts from downtown.

Four days removed from a 42-point loss to No. 2 Notre Dame, the Jayhawks improved to 6-2 on the season and 6-1 at home.

KU returns home Sunday to play host to No. 10 Cal, at 5 p.m.
