Andrew Wiggins, the No. 1 prospect in the high school recruiting Class of 2013, on Tuesday said he’d be attending Kansas University on basketball scholarship.
The news was reported by Grant Traylor, a sports writer for the Herald-Dispatch newspaper in Huntington, W. Va., in a tweet on Tuesday morning. Later Tuesday afternoon, KU coach Bill Self announced in a release that Wiggins had signed a letter-of-intent with KU.
Wiggins, a 6-7 senior forward from Huntington (W. Va.) Prep, chose KU over Kentucky, Florida State and North Carolina.
"Obviously, everyone in Jayhawk-land is overwhelmed and excited today,” Self said. “This was a pleasant surprise because we never had an idea which way he was leading. Andrew did this the exact way he said he was going to. He played his cards very close to his vest as did his mother and father. I knew we were one of four. The competition was very stiff and we were fortunate that we were able to ink him today. He’s a tremendous talent and a terrific kid. Probably an even better kid than he is a talent. We think he has a chance to be about as good a prospect as we’ve ever had.
“He brings athleticism, length, scoring ability and he’s also an assassin, an alpha dog and we definitely need that when you have a whole bunch of young kids. I think he’s going to be not just a good player, but have the chance to be a great one. I know the people that support our program are going to be pleasantly surprised when they see him run and play the very first time he gets the opportunity.”
Self said Tuesday afternoon that he learned about Wiggins' decision like many KU fans did: through Twitter.
Wiggins, who is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, averaged 23.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 2.5 assists last season for 30-3 Huntington Prep.
Wiggins joins previous KU 2013 signees Brannen Greene, Joel Embiid, Conner Frankamp, Frank Mason and Wayne Selden.
"We had an unbelievable class when we signed Brandon (Rush), Mario (Chalmers), Julian (Wright) and Micah Downs (2005-06); that’s a big-time class. This one has more upside," Self said. "Andrew (Wiggins) has a chance to be the first pick in the draft. Joel Embiid goes from being an unranked player to being the top center prospect in the class. He’s raw but so gifted physically. Wayne Selden is a McDonald’s All-American and top-15 guy. Everybody knows about those three, but they are sleeping on are the other three. Conner Frankamp can play for anyone and so can Brannen Greene. Frank Mason is about as underrated of a point guard as there is in the class.
"It’s been a great recruiting class, but we need to have a great recruiting class because we lost so many guys on a team that did pretty well this year.”

3 wonderful things happened today. 7am, my daughter calls to tell me I will finally be a grandfather, My youngest son texted of his 6 month sobriety coin, then when I went on KU Sports to find out about Wiggins. ESPN will live in Allen Field House next year. There will probably be 5 Big Mondays and a Game Day. It is time to start the Jayhawk network.

Sour grapes? Hardly. Just stating that Self's record with top talent sucks. He would have played in obscurity at FSU and he would have just been another star at UK and UNC. KU makes sense but he is rolling the dice.

Hahaha nice try. He will be just another star here at KU and then he will go to the NBA like many before him. And Ben McLemore wonders what team you were watching last year because he feels that Self did a pretty good job with him. Other than an injured Selby (who was on a loaded and experienced team), who has fallen short of expectations? Go back to the Kentucky boards and come up with something better.

Umm, & what about McLemore.
I think he was only a top 25 - 30 recruit and while he was on campus for more than one year he only technically played 1 season and is being projected to be taken between 1st - 4th.

We DON'T need OADs but that doesn't mean we pass on the best kid since Lebron.
Bill Self has had most of his success from developing players over time but that is completely different than telling the next POY to go elsewhere. You seem to have difficulty w/reading comprehension.

If you put Selby and Henry on Self then you are a dope who doesn't know much about basketball. WATCH them play basketball and they were not even remotely worthy of where they were ranked.
Wiggins will be a great fit at Kansas. Only KU could offer all of the key components; be the featured player, chance at a Final Four and close to family. Add in Coach Hudy and KU was an excellent selection that will help Wiggins continue to develop.

DR Me thinks you are jealous. I think that players can either have the Bill Self system work for them or they can sit on the bench and wonder how great they could have been if they practiced hard and played defense. Selby and Henry needed to stay another year but chose not to. I think Ben will do just fine thank you very much.

drsmith obviously does not know why the 2 kids who were so highly touted did not live up to their expectations. some things are beyond a coaches control, and with Selby, he was never healthy, and never made up for the games he had to sit out. look at him now. he made a pro team, then went to the d-league, then out of the league. I guess the professional coaches made him a worse palyer, too. he is obviously a very negative individual and probably blames all of his short comings on others, because dr knows everything and is perfect. he has no clue! I bet dr didn't think we had a chance to sign him, either. and dr, respond however you want, but you won't get a response back, because u r not worth it!

Serious? That's a bit short-sighted. Who did Self hurt? Selby? Henry? Not a chance. Both were overrated walking in the door, then had inflated egos that crippled their ability to perform. Well, Henry's ego hurt, fueled by ESPN parents. Carl should have known better, for sure. Selby simply wasn't that good, and he's paying that price now. Are you considering McLemore? He came in as a solid recruit, but not the next #1 pick. He's leaving as a top-2 pick, probably. Did Self hurt him? You are all wet, DRsmith. Try learning the game before you spout off here again!

Selby started out behind because of not being able to even practice with the team until a few games into the season. And then after his first game, in which he scored 21 points, he got injured. Doctors told him to take the rest of the season off to rehab. Self told him the same. But Selby said (in the book, Beyond the Phog) that he knew he would be gone after the first year and thus wanted the opportunity to showcase his talents for the scouts. That's in the book. None of that is Self's fault.

The Seminoles were a major player in his recruitment but in the end, Kansas was the choice.
During Wiggins' recruitment, it was reported he had the best relationship with Kansas' Bill Self among the coaches at the schools in consideration. Before Tuesday's decision, Wiggins had shut down his recruitment and communication with his suitors.

Curious to see how this nets out with our recruiting class ranking compared to Kentucky's. Not long ago, everyone was talking about Kentucky's class being the best OF ALL TIME.
Now, with KU pulling the #1 and #6 overall recruits in addition to a stable of other top 50 guys, is Kentucky's class even the best for THIS year?

Tarik Black could provide some experienced depth in the post if he comes aboard, as long as there are no defections, this looks like the best roster despite it's youth HCBS has put together at KU. Final Four here we come!

Kentucky still has the #1 but its close. Both have classes that could arguably be considered better than any class in history, the SAME year! Also, most KU players will return after next season...Not so for Kentucky.
What a match-up this could be in the NCAA final!

I am stoked about KUs class, maybe KUs best ever. That being said, UK signed 6 mcDs AA. 6 of the top 20 vs 3 for KU. I love everthing about Bill's signees, but UKs class is historic.

I understand your concerns, but it just makes sense. If KU didn't offer anything else, there is still the fact that him and his brother will be playing their final college seasons next year and what makes more sense than to be less that 3 hours away.

With the cancellation of his at home meetings with KU, UNC, and FSU I thought we had about a 0% chance of this happening. I also thought he was a little rude by doing so. Then he comes out with no hat ceremony and there are more reports of him just being a quiet kid. Shows what I know. Look forward to getting to know his personality and story during his one year at KU.

Wiggins is a smart kid, he knows the other coaches would just let him play, let him do playground basketball. Bill Self knows how to improve players, push them, make them better than they thought they could be. Wiggins will not only do well at Kansas, but he will improve and be NBA ready.

Late last night and early this morning I reading the news about this kid and watching his highlight videos. Just this morning, I was thinking, "wouldn't it be something to land this kid." Oh, my Word. Our Heavenly Father has blessed the University of Kansas with this kid. I can't wait until next Fall, and I bet Coach feels the same way. Way to go KU!

welcome Andrew! i know a lot of folks can say this, but i had a feeling this morning....that this could be a good day. KU goes to WV every year to play a game now, so he'll have all of his friends and family on the WVU campus, right there in his backyard.
what an outstanding get this is...he's a terrific athlete, can get to the rim whenever he wants, and he can only get better on D....wow, we are going to be very tough to stop, once February and March rolls around....with everyone healthy of course.

An article in the Huntington, WV, newspaper (available online) comparing the potential schools (before his announcement) indicated that the weight room and weight program at Kansas are the best for him if he wants to further develop his body for the NBA. While this is a win for the entire program and but Hudy has once again proven her worth to the program.

And he could ACTUALLY initially, maybe the first month or so be the starting C w/ Embiid due to eventually inherit it.
While would be bad news in the short-term for Lucas still think he could be huge by his Jr. & Sr. seasons if he's patient and takes to practicing against these guys.

My heart is racing... I know he will only be here one year but he will help our team balance so much. We almost closed the gap that year! As I recall with UK's talent level, you were picked by most to win it all, and with our group, we basically had no business being in the Final Four much less in the championship game. Yet, we were there thanks in large part to Bill Self.
Speaking of recent coaching history, yours sure worked out well for you last season - - never before has someone done so little with so much!

I had not watched any of these, either, thinking NO WAY are we getting this guy. But he is a MONSTER. And even in the vid you see him passing off the ball when he does that crazy spin move, so you know that he's a team guy as well as a "throw it on my back and go" kind of guy. I've had my breath taken away 3 times today. 7 am my 35 year old daughter calls to tell me I will finally be a grandfather, My youngest son texted me to tell me he received his 6 month coin for sobriety, then this. Watching that video and realizing what is actually happening at KU I'm still in shock at his day. This could be the time to start the Jayhawk TV Network. ESPN is going to be living in Allen Field House. We could easily see 5 Big Mondays. Thank God this was not on tv and there were no hats.

P. Ellis / Traylor / Wesley
Embiid / Lucas
You see the lineup above and it seems to SCREAM that White should take a redshirt year and be ready for anything in '14/'15 - starting or backup SG or SF spot in that season; will be needed. Too many success stories AND Wiggins will only be around for a year to get jealous and ask to transfer. Have patience look at the past models of Releford (Lucas now), etc. and be ready.
OTHERWISE, bulk up and maybe you can steal some minutes from Jamari backing up Perry. Possible though would be giving up the shot-blocking aspect.

This definitely completed the lineup. Kentucky has more depth but I like our starting lineup, and think our depth/experience off the bench fits what Bill does to a T (which cant e underestimated) ROCK CHALK!!!

This goes to show this kid is truly a nice, good hearted, unselfish type of person. If he picks UK - he only does it to be nearly gauranteed a spot in the NC and gain huge amounts of publicity. If he picks FSU - all eyes will be on him through out the whole season, which from what I've read he's not an "all eyes on him" type of person. If he picks UNC (which I thought would have been the best fit for him) - he gets a good team, great coach, and tons of press because of how strong the ACC is in college basketball. He chooses KU - this allows him to be a part of a young team, like himself, which will still allow him the leading roll, but at the same time doesn't get ALL the attention because the Big 12 isn't always an attractive market for ESPN to boast about. He will get more privacy playing at KU then any of the other schools and he will be able to take advantage of reaching his potential before the NBA. I think his pick to KU solidifies his good natured personality and it will be a true treasure to see his one year here at KU.

Randle told everyone after he chose Kentucky what was behind his decision - the system and develop his game to the next leve (it's on Youtube)l. KU's High-Low game is to pound the weak sisters of the Big 12 who can only play small ball like Iowa State, Okie State, K-State, etc. who mainly play extremely small lineups. Don't get me wrong, I would be doing the same if I were Self. Do you think TRob is more skilled or was just bigger & stronger than anyone in Big12? TRob was a master of using his frame to pound his defender in the lane, receive the pass, and lay it in. Didn't work against UK's bigs and not going to work in the NBA as he is finding out. The point I am making is the Randle's, Gordon's, Walker's (elite big men) aren't going to play in that type of offense.

I think that should be Wiggins new nickname -- "Ender". And KU basketball next year can be referred to as "Ender's Game."

Today's story is Wiggins ... I'm always going to go with Today's story because it's the inevitable future. Bmac would have been a treat to have for another year, but Wiggins is more of a slasher and a play maker than McLemore. And honestly, the kid is just going to be flat out fun to watch. As for OAD, it sucks, I hate that these kids are allowed to leave college after a year, but it's not my rule and I can't change that. I can change how much I'm going to enjoy this coming year though, and that's what I'm focused on! RCJH!

Finally a feather in our cap and not one for Kensucky ! I am sure we all think he made the right choice so now it's up to the team to quickly get him onboard. I'd been saying during January and February that next years team had me more excited than this years team. Now I know I am excited about next season ..........

Just clicked onto the site and saw that huge smile on the cover photo!! COL (Cheer Out Loud) including clapping–so exciting. I really like that Mom is happy too (phew!).
@makeshift "we now have: a McDonalds All-American at the 2, 3, and 4; the top center for 2013, and a veteran point guard" along with Andrew White off the bench who is a big time shooter and has been in the program for a year. That starting 4 in Ellis has plenty of experience too along with Traylor's experience off of the bench. Frankamp is a scorer who did well against top high school competition. Greene comes in ranked in the top 50-30 along with Frankamp to add talented depth. Lucas has a year in the program, which includes practicing each day against Mr Withey, and is ready to bang. Mason is a point guard of the future and we all know the mental toughness for the ups and downs it takes during the grooming of a Freshman point guard under Self–it's not about the minutes Mr Mason, you're in a great program that will get you ready.
This recruiting class is mind blowing-too talented to dream about after looking at Emiid and Wiggins above on that International Nike Summit team plus Selden. The other three in Mason, Greene and Frankamp would make this a strong and steady class.
We'll be young, we'll be talented, we'll be exciting to watch. Congratulations Mr. Wiggen's!!! Kansas Welcomes you to Rock Chalk Nation. Go Team :-)

November could be painful. But man this team is going to be scary in Feb. and March. Depth is going to be ridiculous. And I don't see any diva attitudes. Let's not forget the potential for Self v Crook pt III.
When was the last time there was this much talent on two recruiting classes in the same year? BMac was smart to come out this year. Next years draft is insane.
It came down to KU and FSU. Kentucky was already fading and the Harrison twins killed any chance there. Welcome to the Kansas Family Andrew. Can't wait to see you and Selden in the open floor with Nadir pushing it. Scoring should come much easier this year.

Oh My God! I absolutely thought he would pick FSU or UK. Never in a hundred years did I think Wiggins would pick KU. Great pick to be sure, but damm. Just damm. Im not saying we win a trophy next season but our chances just got a whooooole lot better.
Does this give Self the #1 recruiting class? It should be. WOW. I still cant believe it. I was just watching some highlights of the guy and man he is a smooth criminal on the court. Granted its against high school players, but the moves he makes in the post and in transition are staggering! He would give LBJ a run for his money. He probly wouldn't win at this point but he would make him sweat. WOW. Ok now we get to all wax prophetic on the starting line up for the fall and count the days until late night!
This is a major, major coup for the Self man. Now we need an asst coach or 2... Personally Id love to see Paul Pierce come back as an assistant if he retires.

I think one of the most important parts on the USAToday article is where it mentions "Lebron took him under his wing." If they are friends, and Lebron comes to a few games at the fieldhouse with a KU hat on, that will be HUGE for us. If the "best" basketball player in the country visits allen fieldhouse, that's free marketing for us, and will bring future big picks our way. Very excited how this turned out, and I think Wiggins will be a super star with the lineup we have coming in. And don't forget about Ellis; this kid has the most to gain from wiggins being on the team. Ellis could very possibly, by seasons end, be our most valuable player. I didn't say most talented, but I did say most valuable. Bring on the new season yall I'm stoked!

No way that Lebron makes it to AFH. Even the former Jayhawks in the NBA can only make it to games during NBA All-Star weekend, and Lebron usually has prior engagements during All-Star festivities.

This string is almost as long as the one we had over the argument of "Kansas University" versus "University of Kansas"!!! LOL!!
Actually, in retrospect, KU was the most logical choice and I think we all covered every point one way or another much earlier.
1] Immediate maximum playing time at his natural position.
2] Proximity to his brother at Wichita [they'll be able to see each other play].
3] Andrea Hudy and our strength program.
4] Bill Self and a committment to utilize all of AW's talents.
5] A chance to play with his teammates [Jo Jo and Wayne].
6] A DARN good young team that just became a DAMN good young team.
7] Jayhawk Nation, Midwest values and the Source Spring of college basketball.
8] Allen Fieldhouse, The Rules and The Phog.
9] The most passionate, astute, dedicated, clever and handsome posters in the land!!

Bill Self needs to take it down a notch on recruiting, having the number 1 prospect sign with us and all the attention and excitement it has caused and all the people commenting has made this website not load for me for hours.
I think AW3 will be ok, because he could play some 2 and 3, no? So he may not be a backup in just one position. I also think it may not be out of the realm of possibilities we see AW3 start over Selden with Bill Self's track record. Even if it is just for the beginning of the season. I just do not see Bill Self starting 3 freshman the first game. If Selden turns out to be our Marcus Smart you almost have to start him.
One fantasy I had with this incoming class, imagine if Selden can handle the ball. He could spell at PG and you could go
1)6'5 Selden 2)6'7 AW3/Greene ( average height of both :P) 3)6'8 AW1 4)6'8 Ellis 5) 6'11. Embiid
Of course, +/- 1 inch on all the heights, ha, but that is a tall team and so athlethic that it is not like we are playing "big."

I don't mind a 6'0 PG though, especially that guy being Tharpe. .

Like a little kid, I put my hand across the yahoo story until the picture of FSU coach Hamilton changed and Wiggins' picture appeared. Then slowly, I moved my fingers across the page to read Wiggins to play basketball for K, then I stopped and sighed, moved my thumb over to see the A. At that point, I honestly don't know what happened, but my students tell me that I leaped up (we were outside in the school's courtyard), and ran around yelling "WIGGINS! WIGGINS! WIGGINS!" and regained my composure during lunch.

Some of the predictions from some of the experts and some of the "noise" made me hopeful this morning, but I was still surprised when I saw the announcement. Once again, a testament to Coach Self and Stafff. I thought I read that AW had said that among all of the coaches that he was considering playing for, he was the most comfortable with Self. That is a recurring theme. I'm sure Self was honest with AW about expectations (must play defense, etc.) and he and / or family members correctly deduced that HCBS will make him a better player. I think the fact the he chose KU may say something about the young man (team player, wants to work to get better, not a prima donna, etc.) We now have quite a Canadian connection in Lawrence.......James Naismith (and his rules of course!) and AW.

I think all the teams but UNC made out good with Wiggins picking KU. We got him. UK avoids another year of in-fighting egos, and FSU had their name mentioned for a shot at the #1 recruit.

Never thought he would pick KU, but am very happy he did on many levels. Yes I was wrong he did pick KU, had to say that in public for my sister. Next year should be a wild, fun ride ending on a big high. Looking at the roster you see lots of young talent facing a tough schedule. I think by January we will be playing as a tough team to beat heading into B12 play, and by the end of the conference ready for the NCAA's. Going to be a lot of fun to watch. Sure makes falling apart at the end of the MI game seem a distant memory. Finally...a distant memory.

I have respect for Andrew that I didn't have before. (My bad) I mistook his refusal to select a school for arrogance. In hindsight, he had every right to wait until the last minute. To wait until all other factors, including other player choices, were made. He and his family all played it close to the vest, and they did it masterfully.
It would be difficult to be as talented as Andrew is and as heralded as he is in the media and still keep your head screwed on straight. Two involved parents were obviously a big help to Andrew in making a measured, thoughtful choice.

Through this all I truly believed that KU had the best total package to offer Wiggins. The available playing time, quality of teammates and coaches, strength & conditioning and proximity to his brother. I think a lot of people really underestimated how much that came into play. To be withing 2 hours of a brother you are very close to is priceless.
This is HUGE for Kansas if it goes well. Wiggins is the type of player that people who don't follow basketball will turn around and watch. This will really put Self and KU in a whole new light in the eyes of the uber-elite talents.
Wow, just wow. I am still in utter disbelief that this really played out for Kansas. It seems like we've been on the wrong end of so many of these. I thought last year's team was fun to watch. Next year may top it in sheer excitement and entertainment value. I can't wait to see what impact having Wiggins on the team affects Tharpe, Ellis, Traylor, and the rest of this incredible recruiting class.
Get your popcorn, KU fans. This is going to be another AWESOME season!

Most of you have been obsessing about Wiggins for months. Some of you thought he was going to accept one of Calipari's bribes to go to Kensucky. I was one of those people, and I am pleasantly surprised by his choice. As for the rest of you, after all your slobbering over him, I hope you are satisfied. I just hope he lives up the hype and doesn't fade like Xavier Henry and Josh Selby.

I know you'll only be here for a year but you have a good group of players coming in and at least two who are returning who can be pretty good, and maybe even a third one after playing against some of these guys and I'm talking about Traylor who as the body to be a good post man.
This is the best recruiting class at Kansas in some time.

I am excited about Kansas basketball for this year because Frank Mason has never had to play without everyone on the team trying to stop him and with all this talent he is going to unleash havoic on the opponents. Everyone keeps referring to him as just a ball handler. He did lead the State of Virginia in scoring that is the AAA division when he was at Petersburg High School.

I've seen Mason drop the three bomb. He's got the handles too from what I've seen. I'm stoked that Mason is going to be a Jayhawk. Going from any High School experience to the schedule that Kansas plays year in and year out it is a huge jump for a point guard to come here to play. I think he'll get minutes. I also think he'll be a little shell shocked at first on how fast Bill will pull a Freshman point guard for a mistake.
The mantra that Self put into Tharpe's ear this year is to penetrate and create. If people on the board are calling Mason a ball handler, that's perfect, he needs that and that attitude for his new team.
