Jayhawks fall to 18th in latest AP poll

Last week's loss at Florida dropped the Kansas University men's basketball team five spots in the most recent Associated Press poll.

KU, which was ranked 13th last week, fell to No. 18 after losing to Florida but bouncing back with a victory over New Mexico at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., last Saturday.

The Jayhawks (7-3) are one of just two teams in the Top 25 with three losses. The other is 8-3 Kentucky, which sits at No. 19.

Florida (7-2) moved up three spots, from 19 to 16, on the strength of its victory over Kansas.

KU is off until Saturday, when they play host to Georgetown at 11 a.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.

I hate to think of how far we would have fallen had we lost to New Mexico...

Alex Berger 8 years, 5 months ago

We definitely would have been out of Top 25

Polls suck!!!

We lose to THREE Top 20 teams for a 7-3 record and Duke, who we beat, is 10 places higher than us at 7-2!!

It looks like UK[19th] and KU[18th] are being punished as OAD Universities. It is fun to see UK struggle, however

I don't completely agree that we are being punished for who we are. Actually, if us or UK were anyone other than who we are, having lost 3 of the last 5 games would have dropped us like a rock from the top 25. I'm thinking that because we are Kansas, the voters are all looking at this team going... ok, they're KU, they'll come around. they're young, they'll grow. let's give them the benefit of the doubt and keep them around... Don't get me wrong. I'm happy for this thinking.

Completely agree with John. The polls show a lot of respect for Kansas and KY. How would you feel if you were the one loss CO team with an impressive win over Kansas...only to find your sucking on their tail pipe in the polls.

UNC is somewhat out of line at 13. The NCAA Selection Committee places a lot of emphasis on who and where you beat opponents. I think they'd over look UNC losses to UAB and Belmont. Those wins over Louisville, MSU and KY without Harrison are exceptional. I'd bet money UNC would be a no. 1 seed if the brackets were made today.

As for Kansas, who really cares? Whenever we get it together, nobody will beat us. Well be like Sherman marching through Georgia.

As long as we keep our streak of consecutive weeks in the top 25, I couldn't care less what our rankings are in December.

No, they are being punished for losing to teams that they should be better than. Quite frankly, if their names weren't Kansas and Kentucky, they wouldn't be IN the rankings after so many early losses.

This is definitely ok... We're still #4 in the current RPI, with a SOS of #1! Georgetown (6-2), Toledo (9-0) and San Diego St. (7-1) are only going to help that, especially if we win all 3! I love that we played a tough schedule and had a number of true road games and neutral site games in the non-con. This team is going to have a ton of top 100 games this year based on the current RPI (which will change a ton, but here's where it stands now for games we've played and games yet to come: Team (Current RPI rank) ~=Neutral Site

vs Baylor (3), @ Baylor (3), vs Villanova~ (7), @ Colorado (9), vs Oklahoma St. (10), @ Oklahoma St. (10), vs San Diego St. (17), vs Iowa St. (18), @ Iowa St. (18), vs New Mexico~ (27), @ Florida (29), vs Texas (33), @ Texas (33), vs Oklahoma (41), @ Oklahoma (41), vs Toledo (46), vs Duke~ (61), vs Georgetown (75), vs West Virginia (96), @ West Virginia (96)

That's potentially 20 Top 100 RPI games!!! That's nuts, especially with 8 true road games and 3 neutral site games on that list. Even better, 18 of them are currently projecting to finish in the top 100 down the stretch! Way to go Self putting together a fantastic schedule for our boys!

Does anyone think Bill did this especially tough schedule to humble his young turks to keep them teachable?

Walter Bridges 8 years, 5 months ago

It's what Coach Izzo does at Michigan State but it can backfire if the players don't come together or lose their confidence.

Most of the schedule was set before the roster.

Looks about right. Would like to see a consistent effort from our team against Georgetown that matches the 2nd half of the last game. B. Greene play the same way, Tharpe too. Home crowd will help but we need to keep rebounding which will lead to more run outs. Only a handful of games before conference games start and we need to be fairly set then.

Very early polling and things are gonna change. I don't see zona at 1 very long at all. They are already struggling. OSU is a bit of a joke. They are good, but they haven't played anyone. KU is fine and the top 10 will start falling soon enough.
