Jayhawk women lead after Day 2

? A 1-2 finish in the long jump from Francine Kimone Simpson (21-103/4) and Andrea Geubelle (21-4) sparked Kansas University’s women’s track team to a first-place finish in the team standings heading into the final day of the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor championships.

The Jayhawks possess a 15-point advantage over reigning outdoor champion Texas A&M (38.50). Oklahoma is third with 36 points, followed by Iowa State and Missouri (28), Kansas State (25), Texas (24), Baylor (19), Texas Tech (18) and Oklahoma State (3).

After winning three events Saturday, Texas’ men’s team sits 22 points ahead of host school Kansas State (60 points to 38). Oklahoma has 24 points, followed by Texas A&M (23), Oklahoma State and Missouri (22), KU (21), Iowa State (17), Texas Tech (6) and Baylor (1).

KU’s Kimone Simpson, a junior from Chapelton, Jamaica, set a new meet and R.V. Christian track record. She is KU’s first-ever outdoor long jump winner and also won the indoor title. KU’s Lindsay Vollmer placed third in the heptathlon with 5,517 points. KU’s Demi Payne, Jamie House and Julia Cummings were third, sixth and eighth in the pole vault in 13-61/2, 12-63/4 and 12-63/4 respectively. House broke the tie with fewer misses.

KU’s Mason Finley was second in the shot put in 63-11/4 and Chris Toombs seventh in the long jump in 24-33/4.

Texas’ Marquise Goodwin captured his third-straight outdoor long jump title with a personal record leap of 26-10.50.

He is the only men’s athlete in league history to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles in the same year twice. UT’s Isaac Murphy won the decathlon with 7,642 points.

Defending NCAA champion Ryann Krais became the second female Kansas State athlete to capture the outdoor heptathlon (5,661 points). Oklahoma junior Tia Brooks won her first Big 12 outdoor shot put title, in a Big 12 record 59-91/2.

The meet continues at 1 p.m. today.
