KU softball takes two in Louisiana

By Staff Reports     Feb 12, 2012

? Kansas University’s softball team bounced back Saturday at the Southeastern Louisiana Classic, winning both games of a doubleheader less than 24 hours after suffering a pair of season-opening losses on Friday.

The Jayhawks hammered tournament host Southeastern Louisiana 11-0 in the afternoon game, winning their first game of 2012 in five run-ruled innings. Senior Liz Kocon led KU with three RBIs off of a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Freshman Alicia Pille pitched all five innings, striking out eight, walking three and allowing just one hit. Kansas put the game out of reach with an eight-hit, seven-run fourth inning.

In the evening game, KU junior Morgan Druhan pitched a complete game as the Jayhawks edged Jackson State, 5-3. Druhan struck out seven, walked four and allowed three hits. Kocon drove in two more batters to give her four multi-RBI performances to start the season. The Jayhawks did all of their damage in the first two innings, and Druhan held off the Tigers for the remainder of the game.

The two Saturday victories came after two close losses on a rainy Friday night.

KU lost its season opener, 4-6, to Tennessee-Martin Friday evening. The game was delayed five-and-a-half hours because of heavy rain. The weather also pushed back the second half of the Friday doubleheader, a game with Troy, which was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. but did not get under way until closer to 9:30 p.m.

The Jayhawks lost, 8-7, in that game, which did not end until after midnight Saturday. Kansas stormed back from an 8-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, but could not tie the game. Pille took the loss.

Kansas (2-2) will finish out the Southeastern Louisiana Classic today with a 9 a.m. game against Northern Colorado.
