KU’s Diamond Dixon, relay team advance

— Kansas University junior-to-be Diamond Dixon ran the third leg for Team USA in the semifinals of the 4x400-meter relay Friday evening inside the Olympic Stadium. The U.S. finished in 3:22.09, the fastest time among the eight finals qualifiers. The U.S. team will run in the event final, which is slated for 2:25 p.m. (Central) today.

Dixon, 20, ran the third leg of the semifinal, with Keshia Baker, Francena McCorory and DeeDee Trotter.

Unofficial split times had Dixon running the second-fastest of her four teammates at a blazing 50.15, with only Trotter clocking in faster at 50.12.

It had not been decided as of late Friday which four runners in the six-person relay pool will run in the final.

Two of the runners who ran in the semifinal likely will be replaced by two alternates, which will be decided by the event coach at some point before the final race. Even if Dixon is not selected to run in the final, she will still receive a medal if Team USA is to finish in the top three.

If we placed the fastest time in the Semis, it's likely we will medal...

In a side note, I'm doing the unthinkable and rooting for Russia over Argentina, in Hopes that Sasha will get a bronze... he's played very well for the Russians, and since I don't ever expect him to make the NBA ( Slow footed 5's are a thing of the past in the NBA it seems ) It would be nice for on the grandest international stage for his work to be recognized.

A Starter on a national Championship team and a Bronze medalist would be pretty strong Accomplishments for the big man from Tomsk.

No problem here pulling for Russia so Sasha gets bronze. Watched the Spain/Russia game yesterday...Sasha's team leading 14 points was outdone only by Pau Gasol (16 points), a more than pretty decent NBAer. Still marveling at that free throw shooting motion Sasha has "developed"...uuuuuugly.

Not unthinkable. I rooted for Sasha and the Russians against Spain. Go Sasha and Russians against Argentina! Go Dixon and USA in the finals! Great to see some Jayhawks doing well in the olympics!

I would love it if Sasha could leave London with an Olympic medal to go with his NCAA title ring.

And I sure hope that Diamond gets to run in the 4x400 relay finals. Have to think her 2nd fastest time will get her there as long as she's healthy.

Diamond showed great heart and competitiveness in the semi race. We were about 2 strides behind when she got the baton and about 1-2 strides ahead when she passed it on. She deserves to run in the final. She handles herself very well in an interview as well so hopefully she'll get some NBC air time as well.

DD really burned on her final 50m and put Trotter in a great position for hand-off which Trotter quickly exploited.

It was a great race, good hand offs, the women did fantastic. Best of finishes today!

Would love to see Diamond, the youngster, teamed up with veterans Richards-Ross, Felix, and Trotter. It would give her a taste of things to come in Rio! Also, they could very well go below 3:18 with that team, something we have not seen since the East Germans!
