A former Kansas University and NFL football player who faces a DUI case in Douglas County pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

Elvis Patterson, 51, Lenexa, is charged with DUI, refusing to take a preliminary breath test and speeding.

Prosecutors allege Patterson was traveling 12 mph above the 70 mph speed limit on Kansas Highway 10 when a Douglas County sheriff’s officer stopped him June 4 east of Lawrence.

Patterson is scheduled to appear in court again Nov. 16, when Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone is expected to set a trial date.

Patterson said in court Tuesday that he planned to hire an attorney. Patterson played for KU as a defensive back from 1981 to 1983, and he won two Super Bowls as a member of the 1986 New York Giants and the 1993 Dallas Cowboys.
