Waco, Texas ? After jumping out to the program’s best start since 2002, Kansas University’s volleyball team lost its third straight Big 12 contest in a loss to Baylor (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22) on Saturday at the Ferrell Center.
The Jayhawks (11-4 overall, 0-3 Big 12) began the season 11-1 before losing to Texas, Iowa State and Baylor (12-6, 1-3). The 0-3 conference start hasn’t happened at KU since 1997.
For the first time this season, Kansas fell to an unranked opponent.
Not all was bad, though, for KU on Saturday.
Sophomore libero Brianne Riley set a personal best with 34 digs. Third-year sophomores Catherine Carmichael (10 kills) and Caroline Jarmoc (16 kills) set personal bests as well.
KU senior outside hitter Allison Mayfield recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Kara Wehrs posted her fifth with 42 assists and 13 digs. Five Jayhawks tallied double-digit digs, a feat that hadn’t happened since Oct. 29, 2009, against Oklahoma.
The Jayhawks will play host to Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday at Horejsi Center. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
