Kansas University men’s basketball coach Bill Self admitted he had a bit of a queasy feeling entering Tuesday’s exhibition game without Thomas Robinson (hyperextended knee), Elijah Johnson and Tyshawn Taylor (suspension).

“I was nervous before the game, to be honest,” he said. “Today we actually practiced with that group some (starting five of Conner Teahan, Travis Releford, Justin Wesley, Naadir Tharpe, Jeff Withey). The building was hot, too. There may have appeared to be more anxiety because of that.”

KU officials said fans were running and windows were open as usual; the fieldhouse was just steamier than normal.

All tickets were sold, KU officials indicated, with some empty seats in the corners and in the chairbacks.

West on team

Anthony West, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward from Shawnee Mission East, on Tuesday was officially added to the team as a walk-on. West had been practicing with the team since impressing at walk-on tryouts. West, who wears jersey No. 50, has four years of eligibility.

Tharpe’s debut

KU freshman Naadir Tharpe finished with 12 points, eight assists and nine turnovers in 34 minutes. He had seven turnovers the first half.

“Coach came in and told me, ‘Seven damn turnovers.’ That was the first thing he said. He said, ‘Seven damn turnovers. Come on. You’re a better player than that,’’’ Tharpe said of Bill Self. “He picked me up, as well as my other teammates. I went out there, and I settled down definitely.”

Ben McLemore and Jamari Traylor (partial qualifiers able to practice second semester) attended and sat in the stands behind the bench. Both, by the way, will have four years of eligibility at KU starting next season. ... Self said Merv Lindsay (no stats, two minutes) was not a red-shirt candidate this season. He will be eligible to play in games. ... Travis Releford had 14 points, six rebounds and two turnovers in 36 minutes. “He labored tonight,” Self said. “We have to get his confidence back doing some things with the ball.” ... Kevin Young (four points, eight rebounds, 20 minutes) had a nice dunk off an inbounds pass from Tharpe in the second half

If stats counted, KU’s 15 blocks would have tied a school record, set on Dec. 9, 2006, versus Toledo.

I thought Connor and even with his 9 turnovers, Tharpe, looked to be the most smooth and calming out on the court. There were times when Connor was coming off screens as well as just his movement on the court.........that I thought he resembled JJ Reddick. I was very impressed with Connor's quiet confidence tonight. It was much needed!

I love Tharpe! He "Gets It" already! Yeah, he had some bad turnovers on a couple of ocassions with entry passes, trying to split a double team, and two careless long passes just trying to get the Jayhawks into the offense............but the kid has some handles and he knows how to work the pick and roll.

He had some nice ideas early with passes that just weren't executed properly. That will come with experience and timing with his teammates. I am very encouraged by this kid and his play and decision making in the second half reflected that. He'll get the jitters out! Tarc is going to regret not playing with his buddy.

I couldn't agree more. Tharpe is the real deal. He'll get better and better. For me he was the bright spot of the game.

Terrific to see the former hot shooting hand of Conner show up early in this contest. Those three pt. shots rattled the Gorillas and immediately changed their defense. Tharpe is definitely cut in the Aaron Miles mold, and will be a supertalent popping into games from the bench. If Tyshawn or Elijah face injury or more benchings, Naadir appears to be ready to play major minutes. Those turnovers will lessen. Withey: WOW! He has been accused of playing soft and too passive, but he came back into the game with a sprained ankle and continued to post super stats. Young and Wesley showed promise. Not Travis' smoothest night, but we know that he will be a major force this season. Jueneman played quite well for a kid who won a jersey at walk-on trials. He and Conner both know what Self wants (demands) in the way of defense and movement of the ball on offense. All in all, a comforting win for a wacky lineup.

I hate when the season ticket holders, especially those who have the good seats, leave them empty. Greedy jerks. They should lose their right to own season tickets. This isn't K-State or Mizzou. Every seat should be filled. Stop refusing to sell them for less than 20 times the face value.

Right, because life stops the moment KU takes the court. Believe it or not, some things supersede KU basketball ... not many, but some.

Maybe if you stopped complaining about what someone does with his or her time and money and focused more on creating a better existence for yourself, you wouldn't view those who have as "greedy jerks".

That said, with a name like Confrontation, I'm not so sure you even meant what you posted.

Agree with you on the season ticket holders having the right to do what they want and them not being "greedy jerks"...

...but there's no need make yourself look equally ignorant as the person you were replying to by blanketing the Occupy protesters as "dumb", "jealous" "cry babies".

Maybe just leave politics (of the non-Conference Realignment variety) off this site altogether, mmmkay?

Anybody know what the deal with Nino Jackson is? It seems like this kid is giftwrapped in KU blue, but still has not committed. I can only guess he's waiting on coach to tell him he can be part of KU basketball, but I was just curious. I'm not talent scout, but he's rated highly and seems to be interested in KU above all else.

I do not have confirmation or know if the reports were even right, but I've heard that Nino had some possible academic issues that backed KU off his trail a bit. I agree, he's a highly rated player and if there are no issues then why are we waiting. We're losing recruits left and right so lets grab one who's ready to commit if we can (barring red flags of course). We're also a little thin at guard when Taylor leaves and Frankamp isn't coming till 2013.

Apparently, I just located a bunch of those idiots here on this comment thread. You're not just making yourself look pathetic by leaving your seats empty, but you're making the team look like it can't fill the seats. Sure, I can't make every game, but my seats are never empty. I don't feel the need to show how important I am by contributing to the empty seats. You don't deserve those seats if you can't keep them full. I don't care if you can afford them. You sound more like Mizzou fans.

On another note...who gets the most minutes alongside T-Rob? Surprisingly I find myself saying that it could be Wesley when it's all said and done with. He at least seems to have the most potential of the three...

Questions to be answered in 2011-2012:

1] Will Conner be the next Christian Moody wth a killer three spot...or just another pretty face? 2] Will TRob dominate on the court......or ruminate in foul trouble on the bench? 3] Will Jeff be a seven foot wall of shot-blocking monster......or a seven foot tall tackling dummy? 4] Will Tyshawn finally "get it"....or will it finally get Tyshawn? 5] Can The Prophet profit!!?? 6] Can Travis do what it entails to eventually prevail? 7] Can Young climb a rung to get what has to be done? 8] Will Justin be the guy to save the day, just in time? 9] Will Self have the means to put another trophy on the shelf?
